For #TomatoTuesday , I had to show you all the progress on these #Cosmos tomatoes. Another wild and amazing variety from Brad Gates @wildboarfarms that was just released last fall. This variety will ripen with an array of colors and stripes and freckles (you know I love the freckles ). My daughters breakfast lately has been one ripe tomato and a handful of berries she finds each morning. We’ve only gotten ripened hybrid tomatoes from the 3 pack I can never resist from Costco’s spring nursery sales. My daughter says every morning she wishes more tomatoes were ready. We need food to live, and we can grow it from tiny seeds - mind blown. But flowers, though I LOVE them, are lower in ROI. Until I realized how I need them for pollinating too. And then I also realized I need them for pure joy. They make me smile. Happy 4th is July Everyone! . There is so much to be thankful for in this full and dynamic life. Everyday but especially today we are thankful for all of the folks who have served and continue to serve our country. Thank You! ❤️ Today’s red white and blue is a #throwbackthursday from last year because this year we are deep into processing the abundance from our veggie/berry/herb garden. As we work to become a #zerowaste farm and family we have been turning to the garden and pickling, preserving, jamming and freezing everything we can to avoid purchasing things wrapped in plastic from the store. This week we made really yummy dill pesto and as our berries come on we have been making jams and canning them in small batches every other day inbetween chores and family life. We have opened up our sales of fertile chicken hatching eggs in our website and we will continue to hatch chicks until September 2nd this year. We will not be offering fertile chicken eggs in 2020 until July 1st. Our chick hatches will begin again Valentine’s Day week of 2020. We favor raising chicks this time of the year because the weather is warm and brooding is eaiser. The birds also do their growing over the winter when there is a natural slow down in egg production for adult hens which means we do not miss out on any eggs. Come early spring the birds begin to lay strong and we are off to the races. To celebrate this holiday we are offering 15% off any chick or hatching egg order made through our website. Jason is finishing his projects over here! The raised beds are made, now he’s making the trellis to attach to the raise beds. I’m going to grow some flowers and edibles up it. You know the garden I’m always taking pictures of? This was it, one year ago today. I was tired of complaining and dreaming about a garden. I was determined to pursue an little stir in my soul. I wanted to feel connected to my country roots and I wanted something I could do with my son to get us outside daily. I had to convince our homeowners association to let me do it, as well as commit to sharing the harvest with our neighbors (Joes idea actually). I also offered everyone space in the beds, which only one person took. We then tilled the land, built redwood raised beds, converted the sprinklers to irrigation (that we’re only allowed to use twice a week due to CA’s drought), brought in soil, laid down rock and pavers to surround the boxes, and then of course got to plant veggies! I drew up about seven versions of the space with at least as many ideas for what to plant. I read a few books on gardening in small spaces, and called everyone I know who has ever kept any plant alive for advice. And it’s been better than I imagined. It’s brought learning and connection. Free therapy, inspiration out the ears, and lessons on lessons about life. Bottom line: if you have a dream, however small or silly feeling, pursue it.
