Watching hatchlings enter the water for the first time was one of the most magical ocean encounters I have experienced. Their determination to fight for their life was inspiring to watch. Sadly what photos do not capture sometimes is the realities, 1 in 1000 make it to Adult hood. On Heron Island this year 44,000 babies left the nest to the ocean but only an estimated 44 will be seen as healthy adults on our reefs. Every turtle I photographed got eaten by birds or sharks but Mother Nature is a hard world. On blue planet live there was a lot of backlash of the seagulls eating the baby hatchling at the end of the last episode. On Heron island you are not allowed to help the turtles, basically interfere with nature. We must let Mother Nature do her thing as much as it’s sad to see.
