Anthony finally made it home and got to meet the new babies. They are smitten over each other. We lost one of the little ones this morning which was heartbreaking. Despite waking up every 1-2 hours to check on them, something happened. I’m not sure if she wasn’t eating or what but she was lying on the ground barely alive. I tried giving her a syringe of milk and we held her until she succumbed in Wyatt’s arms. I hate losing animals even though my “farmer brain” knows it’s inevitable. #backyardhomestead #tinyfarm #urbanfarm #farmlife #farmlove #hobbyfarm #farmher #goatsofinstagram #goats #meatrabbits #chickens #goatmilk #fresheggs #happyhens #backyardchickens #freerange #getoutside #homesteadersofinstagram #imamodernfarmer #4H

I feed my goats alfalfa. . Wait, no. Let me rephrase that. . I feed my bucks alfalfa. . . whaaaattttt!!!!! . . Yup. Hay, grain, and alfalfa for all of the goats. ESPECIALLY when they aren’t out on pasture. . . So let me clarify. . First, each goat needs about two to four pounds of hay per day (3-4% of body weight in pounds), which can be fed free choice or twice a day. Okay, not too hard, right? For us, we go through about one 50lb bale, of *nutritionally analyzed 1st and 2nd cutting hay*, per every 10-15 goats, depending on the weather, time of year, and most importantly, the individual goat itself (ie. it’s needs). . . Next, grain. . . I hear SO many people say “oh, never feed grain to a buck, especially not to a wether!” And I’ll admit, I used to think similarly. Here’s the thing. Too much of anything can cause problems, that’s just how it is. So when you hear wethers and grain in the same sentence, your first thought should be Urinary Calculi. Or bloat. But generally, UC. It’s not the grain itself. It’s the content OF the grain and the amount fed that makes the difference! . . . And by content, I mean our good friends, Calcium and Phosphorus. And with those two buddies it’s allll about the ratio, baby. Goats require a 1:1 - 2:1 ratio of calcium:phosphorus. Alfalfa = high in calcium. Grain = generally high in phosphorus (depending on the type). . . . My point, my friends, know your animals needs. Know your feed. Know your hay. Know. Your. Goat. . . . I address the rest of this topic and some more in my stories today (hint: it’s very valuable information ) Be sure to share your own tips and things you’ve learned along the way about all things animal health, not just goats, and use the hashtag #herdhealththursday and tag @elizabethtaffet @bluebarnyard @axeandroothomestead @unconventional_acres care to join?! . . . . . . . #goat #babygoat #goatsofinstagram #goatjournal #babygoats #iamcountryside #countrylife #farmlife #photooftheday #farmher #iamamodernfarmer #womenwhofarm #carhartt #animalhealth #herdhealththursday #elizabethtaffet #veterinarymedicine #animalhusbandry

While our area is best known for tulips, I’d have to say, I think we give dahlias a run for their money too. Depending on the weather, we can have blooms late July until last frost. (Often mid October here.) And while the bloom time can feel brief, the work to grow these babies lasts year round. We’ve had our tubers stored in our insulated cooler all winter, and next begins the real work: dividing hundreds of plants so we can get them in the ground around the first week of May. This will be our third year growing dahlias as a crop. While I feel like I’m really only beginning to understand all there is to know about growing them as a crop, I’ve been getting so many questions about dividing and storing. Though I’m no expert, I’m always happy to share what’s been shared with me. I’ll jump on live later today and for a quick demo of how we divide. (Or you could always hop over to YouTube and watch @kitchenshane so helpfully demonstrate the division of dahlias. I’ll link it in our bio You can thank me later.) #twigandvinefarm #sweetnathalie

"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop." ~Confucius I wanted everything to grow so much faster at the beginning. I didn't know how farming and mothering and growing a deep-rooted life would require so much time in uncertainty, in between seed and bloom. — I just kept planting seeds, waking up, taking steps and occasional leaps forward (and occasional slides backward). — Now, entering our 7th year running Good Heart, I've come to some peace with uncertainty. — I look back at that first summer, how I squatted in the garden, belly and all, tending to tomatoes until my back hurt too much to keep going. I see how much has grown: our farm, our fields, our family, and how growth happens alongside stumbles and mistakes, challenges, and letting go. — Wherever you are, whether you're at the beginning or in the middle or full bloom and getting ready to set a new round of seeds, remember: progress happens one step, one seed, at a time. You can plant and tend and grow. — Just keep showing up, no matter how slow it seems to go. You can do this #womensworkwednesday, hosted by @love_and_lavender
