I've lost count of the number of times over the years that people have said to me oh your nose is straight and oh you don't sound black or "oh I can tell you aren't from such and such because you don't carry yourself like them"...in school, one teacher even went as far as to pull me over after class and say " where are you from" so I replied "do you mean what country sir" to which he replied.."no what area?" So I went on to say where I'd been raised &he then replied "yes... I thought so...you're not like those Newham kids" I knew even then there was a racist undertone/bias to the statement as the majority of "Newham kids" in my class were black and I was well aware he wouldn't have pulled aside a white kid to ask the same. Now, comments such as these have come from black,white and asian counterparts over the years - which highlights the fact we all hold unconscious bias and or have been subjected to programming which has instilled fear or self loathing. I have openly admitted on this platform that I recognise and am challenging the prejudices I myself hold (see stories for previous posts). I wonder sometimes how many times I have been deemed acceptable because my features aren't considered too "harsh" by western standards or because my name sounds Scottish. I've actually turned up for interviews and been told that it was assumed I was white and further,I have worked in firms that have openly expressed how they sift through CVs based on gender and ethnic assumptions. It was only months ago I was having a conversation with a colleague who was expressing his upset about diversity and inclusion and positive discrimination in the workplace -Implying that it meant those of ethnic background would be preferenced. I had to remind him that as an older white man- he held those views because his gender and race afforded him automatic privileges. This debacle with Danny Baker is nothing new. However I am glad that the BBC @bbc has taken a strong stance on it. I wonder if their approach is the same with back office staff who have no public profile and where the victim of abuse doesn't have links to the monarchy? #thoughtsofanunrefinedsoul (Continued in comments⬇️)
