At first, I was shocked to learn from @drreneeparo that 40% of physicians are in a #dualphysician relationship or married to someone in healthcare. But then I thought about how much time we spend in training or at the hospital and it didn't surprise me at all! I mean, where else would you meet someone when you are working 80 hours a week? My story is a little different, I actually met my hubby at the gym! Not only that, but I finished my training just as he was starting his. I would be lying if I said it hasn't been challenging. We have spent over 1.5 years apart off and on due to training, rotations, and residency so far - including while Mason was an infant, and now in my last months of pregnancy. But it has been worth it. It is nice having someone who understands what day-to-day work is really like (not like Gray's Anatomy!), being able to share in the joys and downfalls of our profession. We are so understanding of each other when it comes to schedules, because we know how crazy and out of our hands it can be. We help carry the burden during each other's busy times and have gotten better and better at communicating what we need from each other. It is so important to make an effort to date your partner and I am a HUGE fan of the 2-2-2 dating rule: Every 2 weeks go out for the night, every 2 months go away for the weekend, and every 2 years go away for a week! We went away for the weekend when Mason was 8 months old and I can't tell you how incredible it was to reconnect over some beers, explore a new city (Savannah!), and just spend some time snuggling without any responsibilities! Any time we are able to go out to dinner just the two of us, I am immediately reminded of why I fell so hard for Tyler in the first place. It is so important to prioritize your relationship because it truly is the foundation for the rest of your life. I am so lucky to have him by my side on this wild ride, but boy am I glad I am not the one going through intern year this time. Love ya babe! What do you mean I have another 3 weeks left of studying? When motivation runs low, discipline is what keeps you going. So full disclosure: I had a complete meltdown yesterday and panicked so I postponed my exam a week. Ugh it does not feel good admitting that. But I promised y’all the real me, and this is it. Step 2 is supposed to be a piece of cake, at least that’s what I was told. Great - that means no breakdowns, right!? Wrong. Idk what it is - maybe I’m less prepared than my peers, maybe I’m being too much of an overachiever, maybe I’m ill equipped for a life isolated behind a screen - but I certainly feel the pressure. Not as much as this time last year, for sure, but enough to make me question my competence and discount my accomplishments all over again. Isn’t that the weirdest thing? Why do our minds tend to focus on where we’re not rather than how far we’ve come? Why do we discredit our capabilities as soon as we get a single bad sign, even despite the hundreds of flashing lights saying “YOU CAN HANDLE THIS” For the rest of this time period, I’m choosing to focus on the reasons why I CAN do this and on being disciplined enough to take the little steps forward as they come. Do not return from Cape Town, South Africa without heading down to #chapmanspeakdrive which is perhaps the most scenic stretch of highway in #capetown — and one of the most beautiful drives in the world. This narrow two way road bends and curves along the coast opening of to a stunning view of turquoise Atlantic. . We were planning to drive this ourselves but ended up getting nervous about doing that since the steering wheel is on the opposite side of the road (right) in South Africa compared to the US (left). We kept asking our driver literally stop every 2 min to take pictures on this road with the view after each curve of the mountain being better than the last. . One of the most common questions I have got on here is how I balance being a podiatric surgeon, wife, find time to travel, workout, have a dog, and still maintain a personal life. I wish I could give you the "secret" but the truth is there isn't one! It is still a constant struggle for me to juggle all these roles, and it takes hard work. Daily. . . While it is definetly NOT easy to wear all these hats, I have never let this inhibit me from choosing a career in medicine and pursuing my passions. It IS possible to have a fulfilling career and still enjoy your life. It IS possible to make time for exercise and travel and relationships. Balancing personal life and professional life IS obtainable, but is NOT easy. .
