Yesterday evening the world received some sorrowful news. One of the last surviving members of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, as shown on the HBO series "Band of Brothers", has died. . Al Mampre, an Easy Company medic, passed away due to natural causes yesterday in his Colorado home. He joined the Airborne in 1942 and then was sent to Camp Toccoa, Georgia, to train alongside his new found brothers in Easy. Before D-Day, Mampre contracted a nasty neck infection and was unable to jump with his friends. However, on September 17th, 1944, he jumped into Holland during Operation Market Garden. During Easy's probe into Nuenen, he treated Lieutenant Bob Brewer who was shot in the neck by a sniper while standing in the open ahead of the armored column transporting Easy. Despite being shot in the leg himself, Mampre was able to save Brewer's life. After his wound, Mampre would spend the rest of the war as a part of HQ Company. Those around him described him as warm, kind, and having a great sense of humor. I wish I could've met him but, I am lucky enough to have his signature and something he touched and saw thanks to @valorstudiosinc. That's as close as I'll ever get to Mampre, an incredible individual. On 22nd and 23rd December 1940, 441 Luftwaffe aircraft dropped 467 tons of high explosives and 1925 incendiary bombs onto the English city of Manchester and surrounding towns. It became known as the Christmas Blitz and 750 civilians were killed. In one particular case, three generations of the same family celebrating a Christmas party were killed in a blast at Varley Street in Miles Platting. The signs of the Christmas Blitz are few and far between in a city keen to modernise, but if you search hard enough it is there to be found. This cemetery is by far the most tangible evidence of the Blitz, with more than 40 headstones being heavily covered with shrapnel and fire damage. One part of the cemetery is complete void of any graves, where a bomb left an enormous crater. I wonder if that's because there are no "Americans" - only a stew of immigrants, or if it's because the earth from which we exist has been so kind to us and our forefathers. Or is it because the "American" is the offspring of the logical European who hated opression and loved freedom beyond life. Those great mountains and the tall timber, the cool deep lakes and the broad rivers, the green valleys and white farmhouses, the air, the sea and wind, the plains and great cities, the smell of living - all must be the cause of it. And yet, with all that, we can't get away from the rest. For every one of our millions who has that treasure in his hand there's another million crying for that victory of life. And for each of us who wants to live in happiness and give happiness, there's another different sort of person wanting to take it away. Those people always manage to have their say, and Mars is always close at hand. We know how to win wars. We must learn now to win peace. Stick our noses in the affairs of the world. Pictured above is the typical weapon list of an American airborne rifle squad in December 1944. Starting off we have the command element of a squad leader and his assistant both are armed with the venerable M1 Garand rifle with the assistant squad leader additionally having an M7 grenade launcher mount attached to his rifle. Next up is the MG team of three men, the machine gunner with an M1919A6 and an M1 paratrooper carbine, the assisstant mg gunner armed with a Browning Automatic Rifle and an M1 paratrooper Carbine, the final member of the machine gun team but the most important is the ammo bearer who carried an M1 Garand and his own ammo plus extra ammo for the two machine gunners. Finally we have seven riflemen all armed with M1 Garands and one with an M7 grenade launcher attachment. Easy Company's Frank Perconte and his wife Evelyn Welch. The couple married while Frank was on furlough from training in 1942, and were married for 61 years until Evelyn's death in 2003. Evelyn sadly developed Alzhiemers and spent the last 4 years of her life in a nursing home. Frank would go there each morning to spend all day with his wife, brushing her hair, and taking her laundry home to have it perfect for her Frank said "I do what I've got to do because I love doing it for her.
