Guys, trail running is hard. Like, really hard I cannot imagine doing 50 miles of what I just did, BUT I know I will get it done when the day comes. I’ve got lots of training to do between now and then, specifically power hiking up hills (TOTALLY different group of muscles)! #teamrun4prs #run4prs #trailrunner #tnfwi #thenorthfaceendurancechallenge #50mile
Was great to race the @cyclingtimetrials CTT National 50 mile time trial championships today in Llandovery, very windy, a bit lumpy but rode a PB of 1:54:06 feeling pretty chuffed with that after only getting back on the bike in April •

Finished the North Face 50 Mile! 52 Miles. 7,800’ of vertical. 12 hours of straight running / scrambling to get to this finish line! Ultra-Marathons are not a singular effort, by any means. I could not have crossed the finish line with out the support from my amazing fiancé. We woke up at 2:30am race morning to get to the starting camp by 3:30 which then we waiting for the race to go off at 5am. At every aid station she had everything ready so I could come in get what I needed and head back out into the woods for hours at a time. She was out there for over 14 hours while I was out there and I’m so grateful for all that you do for me ❤️ #run #trailandultras #ultras #runeveryday #runeverywhere #northface #northfaceendurancechallenge #nfec #running #running #ultras #bearmountain #tnfecs #ecsny #50mile
What a race, my first 83km (50miles) trail ultra done in 13:52 (190/352). Didn’t count the amount of (mental / physical) up and downs. But I had a blast. So happy that @moilama and I got to pace each other the last 20k or so, it was much easier that way. We could even run “fast” over the line. M2L ultra.
The race started at Old Trafford at 6:15 (due to start at 6am but they waited for those in the toilet line... A really nice thing that I've never seen before). The sun's starting to rise and off we go.
We do a loop on the road and I get chatting to a guy and I felt I was going a bit fast, so by mile 1 I slowed slightly (I had no business being in the front pack.
I then settle into a pace that was still too fast for a 50mile race but I knew the sun was coming and wanted to put as many miles in before it did.
Some nice scenery around a lake and through trails and then I saw my family at mile 19. Didn't need anything, met them again at 25 where I changed from my road trainers (which are very worn and were starting to give me hotspots). It was mostly hard trail or road/path. I hit the marathon point in 4h12m, then a long drag to the next aid station along a canal with a power station as the only point of reference. I had a major bout of nausea and really thought that was it for me. Dry heaving and cramps took over and I had to walk. I ran out of water completely and thought I had missed the aid station somehow (by this point I'd almost got lost twice). But like a mirage it appeared. This was then a really nice stretch along the river and through some parkland. I had a second wind and finally thought I could continue although I still had cramps and was eyeing up all the bushes for potential toilets. I got into Hale and snuck into a pub to do my business then met my family again who walked with me for a few minutes. But I had work to do. The final half marathon was upon me and most of it took part on a really long and frankly boring drag into Aintree. I thought it would never end. It was like running on a treadmill. I adopted the ultra shuffle (in my case walk half a mile, run a mile... Then it was walk half a mile, run half a mile) and I yo-yo'd between other runners doing the same. At mile 45 I refuelled and had a bite of a peanut butter sandwich. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't swallow it, I was then told it was 6 and not 5 miles left to go. Back onto the treadmill, I thought it would never end! Eventually it did. Horraay. P49, 7th Lady.
Raced 80 miles last week between these two races. Both completely different styles and both took a lot out of me in different ways.
The NJ marathon was a fast and flat course right along the coast running through some awesome shore towns like Asbury Park. My goal was to take it easy that day as to not kill my legs for the second race, however starting off I was feeling really good and comfortable running 6:40s so I decided to keep going. A little over halfway I was feeling the effects of starting off fast but didn’t want to waist all of the effort thus far so I did my best to maintain. After finishing that race I realized I was more wiped out then I thought, my right foot was feeling beat up and legs were tired.
I did the best I could to recover in the few days in between, I was taking turmeric / ginger rolling out my legs and foot and doing everything I could to recover.
Six days after the NJM I lined up for the North Face 50M which was as far from a fast and flat marathon as possible. The race ended up being about 52 miles with 7,800’ of climbing. Luckily the majority of the climbing was in the front half but I hit that moment in the race where I was feeling the effects of the week prior. My legs were beat, but just like all ultra runners say. I hit that second wind and was able to finish running it in.
This week has taught me a lot, I was able to push pass the previous limits I thought I had for myself. I’m grateful that I was able to race 80 miles and come away without injuries. But mainly, we can all do hard things, if you out your mind to it. It may take really going into those uncomfortable moments and digging deeper when everything is tired and everything hurts, but I believe the reward is worth going through those uncomfortable moments. Here’s to the next ones!
