WATCHING AA
_
It was Sunday afternoon and everyone was getting ready to head to Calabar, where AA was going to be having meetings later in the day. I was out in the living room when AA came out and headed straight out of the door for prayers at his private mosque. Not long after, he returned and made straight for the dinning area where lunch had been served and a number of people joined him at the table. I have never seen AA eating alone. There are always people at the table with him: family, friends, and so forth. On this day, I noticed that a guy that I had been chatting with earlier was at the table with him. We were meeting for the first time.
As lunch wound down, AA picked up his phone and made a call. He spoke briefly before passing the phone to that same guy that I had been chatting with earlier. The fellow got up from the table and walked out of the door with AA’s phone. I was surprised that he did not mind someone going away with his phone like that.
Minutes after, lunch was finished and AA hurried in the general direction of the door. As he approached the door, one of his aides motioned towards his feet and he followed his eyes to his feet and exclaimed, “Oh, I forgot to put on my shoes! I was going to go with my slippers and someone would have seen me and said, “Look at this bush man from Adamawa!” He said this as he turned around and walked back to the living room where he sat down and put on his shoes. It was intriguing to find that he had the ability to make a self-deprecating joke like that.
While he was putting on his shoes, the fellow returned and passed the phone to him to finish the conversation that he had started. As an observer, it was interesting to observe how simple he was- he let someone use his phone and look after himself, in a culture where being a "big man" often means being unapproachable and being waited on constantly.

DINNER WITH AA.
_
It was nightfall and once busy compound was now empty as all the guests had finally left after a day of feasting. My colleague and I were sitting under the stars with one of AA’s sons, who had just gotten married that weekend in Jada. I still remember how he shared the love story of how he met his new wife. We talked until the stars sparkled brighter and we were invited to dinner. Dinner would be served at his dad’s (AA) living quarters, so we went with them.
_
Inside his dad’s residence, the table was laid out and we walked in and greeted AA, who was already seated at the head of the table. He greeted us as well, mentioning my name, saying it right. I was intrigued by this man who had only heard my name once and still remembered it. Hearing my name from his lips must have made me feel more relaxed around him.
_
We served ourselves quickly and made to leave the private dinning area to go to another room, when AA called to us and asked us to join him at his table. There were three other people at the table besides us. It was hard to believe that he had just invited us to share a table with him but we were not dreaming it; it was actually happening.
_
A lot was said that day but I remember one thing in particular. Dinner was over and it was getting late. AA got up and started leaving the room, when someone said something about luck, and how some people make fortunes by luck. Immediately, AA, who had already walked out of the dinning area stopped, walked back in, stood behind a chair and with his hands on the back of the chair said to us, “I do not believe in luck. You have to work hard for anything you want in this life…” and then he was gone, almost as if he was not there a moment before.
_
I never forgot how simple he was nor his words of wisdom.
