"Sunday School" While driving down highway OK-56, almost to Okemah, Oklahoma, I drove right past this little church in Okfuskee County that had been over grown and obviously abandoned. Based on the architecture I'd say it was probably built in the 50s or 60s. I kept driving for about 2 or 3 miles. Just racking my brain thinking about what I might have been missing by not stopping. So I did... And the door was open. I pull up and take pictures of the outside. Went all around the little building gathering shots from different angles. Went up to the door to get a few from the steps and noticed that it was ajar. At this point I thought maybe, just maybe, it was open? Maybe somebody was there? So I cracked open the door slowly and took a step inside. I called out "hello?" with no answer back. I inched my way inside. Walking down the aisle felt surreal. It took me back to being 9 years old again and being at the small community church of Edgar Springs, Missouri. In the picture of the "register" you will see that their last day of operation they only had 5 people in attendance. Then only 5 the week before that. I can only imagine that is probably why the church is no longer utilized. The area's population was impossibly low. So, my exploration continued. Despite my better judgment I poked my head down into the lower level basement. I felt uneasy. I felt as if I was pressing my luck. So I stuck my camera around the corner with the flash on and snapped a few pictures and headed back up. I took my pictures quickly and I left. Maybe it was open to the public? I'm not sure I'll ever know. Abandoned Island Grove Methodist Church circa 1885. The original pews were made from tree stumps. The whole town is now abandoned. It was once surrounded by orange groves and was a local fruit shopping point.
