Album: Burd Artist: Wilma Vritra Genre: Abstract Hip Hop/Neo-Soul/Experimental Hip Hop/Nu Jazz Release year: 2019 ______________________________________ Burd is the perfect album for a beautiful day. At its core it’s abstract hip-hop with the offkilter flow, the shorter song times, etc. but this one travels to a lot of different territories and manages to make a beautiful showcasing of jazz, soul and multiple sub genres of rap. A lot of the runtime it’s a beautiful mix of playful soul music and hip hop with lots of childlike wonderment fueling it. Everything seems so innocent and larger than life in a beautiful way. It seems so intimate and genuine and it makes it hit hard. When the more experimental ideas start creeping in, it shows a completely different side to the album where this beauty of life gets washed out and dark and it really reflects the loss of innocence as you grow old really. In these sections it touches on lo fi rap, nu jazz and watery sounding samples in a really lax and tender way. But after all the dark introspection, it reminds you to try to keep being positive and keep going. My only complaint with the album is it can seem a little all over the place sometimes but I feel this could easily be worked out in future releases. It’s basically a cheap #akaiapc that you can download as an app and use on any iPad or tablet.
