Hey Queen! Although Black Girl Magic is real, so are the health issues that plague our women. Knowledge is key to addressing our physical and mental health. Fibroids affect Black/African American women severely, however, we also wait longer to seek help. Research has proven that there is a disproportional affect on the rate at which we are diagnosed with fibroids as well as the age of onset. We are more likely to be diagnosed in our 20’s compared to other races, which are diagnosed in their 30’s. How does this directly impact you? Fibroids can affect fertility (chances of getting pregnant) and create a higher risk of problems in pregnancy like NEEDING a C-Section or having placental abruption. Following up with your Gynecologist and monitoring changes in your period will help identifying this problem sooner than later. We visited Shanti Nepal’s most recent health center construction in Latap. Shanti Nepal, one of MCC Nepal’s partner organizations, is a Nepali NGO that supports local government health posts to provide free services, including natal care, and medication to individuals seeking and needing medical care. In this particular case, before the construction of this health center, folks would have had to walk a few hours over steep hills to reach any kind of medical care. Not ideal, especially if you are 9 months pregnant! _ Pictured is our awesome team at the center posing with our new scarves that were given to us in every community that we visited. We consistently received such a beautiful and warm welcome. The Stir Up with Dr. P My sister & father are currently on a mission trip in Jacmel, Haiti with @cchaiti. The Women’s Group of the La Fond community showed their appreciation for a health education session on HPV & cervical cancer with a song. HPV is a different virus than HIV and HSV (herpes). 79 million Americans (1 in 4), most in their late teens and early 20s, are infected with HPV. There are many different types of HPV. Some types can cause health problems including genital warts & cancers. Many people across the world don’t have access to the HPV vaccine or routine Pap smears. Sadly, Haiti has the highest rate of cervical cancer in the world. Think about that the next time you decline the vaccine that could save your life or the life of your children. Remember this the next time you want to put off your Pap test because it’s a little uncomfortable.
