The road hasn’t been easy. I’m a first generation college graduate, who attended DC public schools. I was the ONLY African American in all of my first year law classes. __ My first semester in law school #Ferguson happened. My second year I spent 18 days at the fourth precinct protecting for #JamarClark. That summer I protested at the Governor’s Mansion for #PhilandoCastile __ A month before graduation, I left school for a semester after being frustrated about institutionalized racism. I realized these systems aren’t broke they weren’t creating for Black people to thrive in. __ In 2018, I married my best friend and a few months later we divorced. I decided to go back to school and get what I worked my behind off for. I also became the youngest President in the history of the Minneapolis NAACP. __ 2019 has challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally. It has not been easy but it was worth it. I just want to encourage everyone to keep God first and remember who you are. We are the hope and dream of the enslaved African! ✊

This week's ARTivist spotlight shines on Tatyana Fazlalizadeh--AKA @tlynnfaz--a Black/Iranian visual artist and Oklahoma City native. She is known for her gallery work and street art, including her world-famous "Stop Telling Women to Smile" street artwork. Her work focuses on Black empowerment through stunning shaded portraiture. Fazlalizadeh's art enables Black faces to "take up space" by doing just that--blowing up their images in massive murals, posters, walls, and city blocks.
