Taking more court on the float. As a libero it’s pretty straight forward: Pass well. Dig, dig, dig. Be able to set well after a dig from the setter. But I believe Liberos can & should to expand their role and to not only lead the reception but demand to receive the ball, putting the setter in the best place to sideout and your hitters in the most comfortable situation to get a clear approach. This doesn’t mean to steal every ball as most hitters I’ve played with are able to get into a hitting groove after receiving well but there are certain situations where you can and should be more aggressive. Protecting the pipe. It’s not secret that our national team runs in the pipe, so many teams will commit to a slower, shorter serve to take out our back row outside from attacking the pipe. A great row to take more court is in row 1, allowing the receiver in position 5 to slide back and have a clear run way. Feeling the vibe. Even though float serve reception is typically received at a much higher percentage than jump serves, receivers and Liberos alike lose much more confidence after shanking a float serve than a powerful jump serve. If you can feel your OH isn’t in the best headspace, free him up from the anxiety of float serve reception to get his confidence back in attacking and later let him come back into reception when he is more confident. Feeling yourself. Again, it’s important to have a balance and to not go full tilt and snake every ball but if you are in “flow state” and believe you can give your setter the best touch possible to sideout (or if it’s late in the match) kick your OH out and allow him to have 100% focus on his approach line. If you know you can get the ball to where it needs to be, do what you do best, be aggressive and go pass the rock. #usavolleyball #volleyball #veganathlete #vegan #libero #adidasvball

The level of love we do or do not feel is equal to the level of resistance we have within ourselves. Everything in the material world is constantly dying, constantly changing and constantly being reborn. When we try to cling to life, grasp it, or control it, we only restrict it, and we prevent ourselves from flowing freely with it. We have to learn to trust in the present moment, to welcome change, to allow life to flow in whatever direction that it wants. When we resist change or cling to expectations of how we think things should change or cling to expectations of how we think things should change, we only create our own suffering. We cannot stop life from living, we cannot prevent things from changing and we shouldn’t stress over what we cannot control. Once we see that resistance is only causing ourselves to suffer, then we can choose not to suffer, and we can choose to surrender to the present moment, and appreciate life as it exists in each moment. Return to the breath. A book that has changed the way I train and compete is ‘The Inner Game of Tennis’ by Timothy Gallwey. Gallwey pays specific attention towards the power of the breath and how we can harness that power, “When the mind is fastened to the rhythm of breathing, it tends to become absorbed and calm. Whether on or off the court, I know of no better way to begin to deal with anxiety than to place the mind on one’s breathing process. Anxiety is fear about what may happen in the future, and it occurs only when the mind is imagining what the future may bring. But when your attention is on the here and now, the actions which need to be done in the present have their best chance of being successfully accomplished, and as a result the future will become the best possible present. From peak performance coaches to positive psychologists, if there’s one universal theme that ALL great mental training teachers come back to it’s this. Bring your mind back to the present via your breath. Gallwey doesn’t suggest to change your breathing but to simply observes it. That act alone brings you out of any fear of the future or regret of the past and into this moment. Major Key : Breathing. It’s HUGE. Bring your attention to your breath when your mind starts to get a little jumpy can help you reset, dissolve the thinking mind and let you get back to being the best version of yourself. #usavolleyball #volleyball #veganathlete #vegan #libero #adidasvball #veganVIBES #inthesoulshine

The Groove Theory of Habits There is a lot of talk about grooving one’s strokes in tennis. The theory is a simple one: every time you swing your racket in a certain way, you increase the probabilities that you will swing that way again. In this way, patterns, called grooves, build up which have a predisposition to repeat themselves. Golfer use the same term. It is as if the nervous system is like a record disk. Every time an action is performed, a slight impression is made in the microscopic cells of the brain, just as a leaf blowing over a fine-grained beach of sand will leave its faint trace. We can also use this theory in volleyball, by holding our platform after receiving a serve, float or spin ball - grooving a more consistent feel, platform and angle that we put to the ball. When the same action is repeated , the groove is made slightly deeper. After many similar actions there is a more recognizable groove into which the needle of behavior seems to fall automatically. Then the behavior can be termed grooved. Because these patterns are serving a function, the behavior is reinforced or rewarded and tends to continue. The deeper the groove in the nervous system, the harder it seems to be to break the habit. We have all had the experience of deciding that we will not pass the volleyball a certain way again. It is a painful process to fight one’s way out of deep mental grooves. It’s like digging yourself out of a trench. But there is a natural and more childlike method. A child doesn’t dig his way out of his old grooves; he simply starts new ones! The groove may be there, but you’re not in it unless you put yourself there. In short, there is no need to fight old habits. Start new ones. It is resisting of an old habit that puts you in that trench. Starting a new pattern is easy when done with childlike disregard for imagined difficulties. You can prove this to yourself by yourself by your own experience. #usavolleyball #volleyball #veganathlete #vegan #libero #adidasvball

"This can't harm me." “I might not have wanted it to happen but I decide how it will affect me. No one else has that right. Who are we to pass instant judgement on a situation and or experience as “good” or “bad” Some people actually benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and uncertainty. Having a bad performance, getting cut, breaking up with a partner or loosing a job could all be initially labeled as “bad.” But we decide what we will make of each and every situation. We decide whether we'll break or whether we'll resist. We decide whether we'll ascent or reject. #NOEZYBUCKETS #usavolleyball #volleyball #veganathlete #vegan #libero #adidasvball

Satori. A Zen concept, Satori occurs when attention rests in the present moment, when the body is alert, sensitive, relaxed, and the emotions are wide open and free. In modern athletics, It’s been translated to the “zone” or “flow state” it can also be felt in music, dance or any other challenging activity which can serve as a gateway to Satori. This presence can be built from meditation, a constant focus and return to the breath and the mindfulness that are no ordinary moments; moment to moment with our consciousness focus on the present. Read more about awareness of breath at @themindfulathlete. Until then, take a deep breath and open yourself to the abundance that this moment has to offer you. #usavolleyball #volleyball #veganathlete #vegan #libero #adidasvball
