Personally, I love playing with vocal layers. It opens up so many options in terms of tone, panning, voices, etc.⠀ ⠀ Some artists sound better with just a lead vocal in the mix, but tbh I’m not one of them. When I layer my vocals I do minimum 3 tracks (pan a little left & right), but on occasion I’ve gone as far as recording up to 6, in addition to my lead (for wider and thicker panning)...not counting times when I feel like harmonizing ⠀ ⠀ I’m also a big believer in “more is better” when recording. Worst case scenario, you just don’t use the tracks you don’t like! It’s about having options ⠀ ⠀ Do you like vocal layering? There are many different types of EQs, each with their own capabilities and personalities. Graphic, Parametric, Fixed frequency (single band), Multiband, and more. The key is choosing the one that’s right for the specific needs of the element of the song you’re working on. Some EQs can precisely define frequencies to boost/cut, while others elegantly broad stroke it and treat things more holistically. Some add color and saturation to the sound, and others keep it clean. Do some research and read up on what’s what! Being at least loosely familiar will help inform your decisions. Sidechain compression is a nifty little trick to help make room for some key elements in your mix! Sidechaining a compressor means that one track’s compressor will be triggered by the output of another track that you specify. This is super useful in helping your bass/808 & kick mesh well, or in ducking a conflicting instrument to make room for your vocals (or another instrument). Set your attack appropriately (usually pretty fast with kicks & 808s, but it could be a little slower with vocals or other instruments) and set your release for the amount of ducking you want and you’ll be good to go - I typically like a faster release so I don’t get more compression than I need, but it all depends on what’s conflicting. 3-5 dB if gain reduction is usually good, but sometimes I’ll get aggressive and go for 7-10. Different compressors have different ways to link to your trigger track, so figure out how to make it happen with your favorite compressor and get to sidechaining!
