Sweet Velvet having some breakfast The Softies and Baby Reed are all doing well. They’ve become the sweetest roommates- Reed LOVES having friends! They have moved into one corner of the kitten room where they can sort out the litter box. I love this group so much- I promise I’ll post more of them! ❤️

If you’re happy and you know it, purr in a hand Shuri girl is eating 3-5 ml every two hours and she cuddles and purrs afterward. She had a concerning poop this morning but it has steadily improved immediately and without intervention, so maybe her tiny organs are just getting properly acquainted. I’m keeping a very close eye on her. ❤️ #tinybutmighty

Mustard Seed has so much joy and love to share. He pats my ankles with gentle paws when I go into the kitten room. It melts my heart He’s about 26 oz, and six weeks old. He’s exactly on track to be neutered at two pounds and eight weeks of age. Kittens can begin reproducing as young as four months old, so Mustard Seed will be safely sterilized so that he will never contribute to cat overpopulation. Good work, Mustard!

Baby Reed is a girl. ‍♀️ Tiny parts are tough to judge sometimes and my brain has been sideways all week. 9 bottle babies at once is an unbelievable task for anyone. I’ve never even tried to juggle this many on the bottle all at the same time, and to be honest, it will be a long time before I attempt this again. With Shuri’s passing I began worrying even more about Reed, and my instincts were right. Reed is having pretty gnarly diarrhea and sneezing. I started her on an antibiotic, but her appetite is taking a downward turn. I gave her a shot of B12, subq fluids, and dextrose, and I’ll tube feed her if she doesn’t perk up. She is exquisite, and I will not rest until she feels better. I’m really feeling the need to have more ICU equipment available for these tiny babies, like a legitimate incubator. Last I checked they are in the realm of (updated this part- I was way off!) $800-900 USD- steep, but the necessity shows itself when kittens like Reed and Shuri would benefit from oxygen and a humidity controlled environment. I’ve never fundraised on such a scale but this seems a worthy cause. Let me know what you think! Anyway. Baby Reed has had some gut issues the past few days. She needed one round of tube feeding when her appetite declined, but decided that was enough and has been back to the bottle ever since. I started her on two medications- Panacur, for deworming, and Baycox for possible coccidia. I’m so happy to report that after just two doses Reed’s appetite has doubled and her stool is improving rapidly. She figured out how to flail her arms and I fully lost consciousness Something so sweet about this little lady is her extra-long tongue in a perpetual blep. ❤️

Dijon has so much personality and can say so much with just one look! Sweet and petite, this adorable scruffy girl came to Labs and More with her 6 little Dijon Puppies. Dijon is happily retired from motherhood and enjoying the good life in a foster home. Her puppies are quite the variety pack- adorably whiskery and scruffy to soft and sleek, black and tan or white as snow, big and chunky or petite and dainty, her litter seems to have it all! We don’t know who dad (dads?) is (are?), so we can’t be sure how big they’ll get or what their breed mix is, but we do know these fun little pups are hoping to move into their forever homes in about 2 weeks. Tiny baby Shuri died in my hands in the early hours of the morning. Something just wasn’t quite right with her from the beginning, but she was so vibrant and strong... until she wasn’t. She had a strange bloody stool on Wednesday, but it didn’t persist and she actually had perfect poop for a little bit. Her lungs must have been underdeveloped and I think her rib cage may also have been too small. Something just wasn’t quite right with the way she suckled- she would hold the nipple in her mouth and swallow but not consume any formula. Just not quite right. I accept the risk of heartbreak and loss each time I say yes to a tiny kitten. I’m prepared for it. As much as it empties me to watch her die, to lose her, I’m honored to love her long after her last breath. All of this could have been prevented if Shuri’s mom had been spayed. It’s so simple and prevents so much suffering. Please consider Shuri’s short but important life and spay your cats. Don’t let them have babies to die in our hands. Make the suffering stop. Please.
