Keys to Finding a Mentor & Building That Relationship (Part 2) ___ We are honored to have Dr Bonnie Mason (@drbonniemason ), founder of the amazing mentorship program “Nth Dimensions” (@nthdimensions ) finish sharing her insight on identifying mentors ! ___ 4️⃣ Be resourceful - Once again, your mentor will be very busy with clinical and research obligations, so it may be up to you to use alternate resources in order to find out about, your mentor’s availability, locations or even the surgical cases or procedures that are coming up the next day. Part of being resourceful is your ability to speak with staff (including residents) who work with said mentor to find out information, when it may not be easily available. You will be surprised about the valuable information that they will provide! Another part of being resourceful is the willingness to invest in your educational experience, such as purchasing books, suture kits, shears, etc. ___ 5️⃣Be open - You will need a team of mentors, some who look like you and some who don’t. Each mentor should be able to give you sage advice to support you based on your specific situation. Diversify your mentor base; when we are open, we recognize that we have more in common with others than we may originally think, and that we can learn something from everyone. ___ 6️⃣Be coachable/teachable - Make it a point to be open to learning. Search for opportunities to learn about new academic concepts, clinical skills procedures and communication skills, whether you are just observing or having a full hands-on experience. Not only that, you can learn important skills and concepts from EVERYONE on the team from the physician to the nurses to the staff. Most of all, be willing to solicit and receive both positive AND negative feedback on your performance, strengths and areas in need of improvement. Three years of classes, lots of writing, an internship, lots of research, observation hours, group projects and presentations, occasional tears and mental breakdowns, long days and late nights, missed weekends and doubts of my decision to go through with this program.
