Every year we work our yearling heifers, this includes a permanent ID number that is reflected with a new ear tag, getting an individual weight and a BANGS vaccination. We put a tattoo of the heifers new tag number in its ear, that way we can identify an animal if it loses its tag. The BANGS vaccine can only be given by a licensed veterinarian, it is for vaccinating against Brucellosis in cattle. Brucellosis is extremely contagious, it will cause abortions and can show up in other ways as well. It can also be found in other animals (besides cattle) such as bison, elk and swine. In 1954 Congressional funds were approved for a Brucellosis Eradication program to eliminate the disease from the country. #meyercompanyranch

We have ume in the house! We’re lucky to be able to source this gorgeous stone fruit from a multigenerational family farm in Woodland with an established orchard. Last year’s production was minimal, but this year’s harvest was abundant, and we’re taking full advantage by bringing in 10,000 pounds of fruit. After the labor-intensive process of de-stemming each individual ume fruit by hand, we'll put it all into a stainless steel tank with rock sugar and some of our housemade California Shochu and let that rest for six months before transferring to French oak. The result will be our own California expression of umeshu. When the umeshu comes out of barrel, our Baller Single Malt Whiskey will go in, resting for about six months and picking up some of the sweetness, acidity, and nutty complexity imparted from the umeshu. If you’re a Baller fan, you’ll recognize these qualities as hallmarks of the whiskey and hopefully appreciate these little beauties as much as we do.

CORN GRAZING- A few years ago we decided to see if we could effectively grow corn in western Montana, with a normal growing season for us being 60 days. Overall it has gone very well and it's something that we have incorporated into our everyday operations. We plant the corn (weather permitting) in May, we will get frosted out anywhere from late August to early September. We leave the corn until December/January (again weather dependent) when we put our cows on the pivot for winter feed. The pivot in this video is 140 acres and we have approx. 300 head of cattle on it. We use a tractor bucket to knock down a path across the entire pivot and then we string up hotwire to keep the cattle from going out into the entire pivot. The section that is made will allow the cattle 2-3 days of feed before you need to make a new path and move the hotwire again. Our cows graze fields off the farm during the day then in the evenings the cows have the option to carry on grazing ‘home fields’ or come inside the cattle shed and eat their TMR (total mix ration - this is made up of grass and maize silage with added minerals and concentrates). With our conveyor belt system we need to distribute just the right amount of feed, if we feed too much it’s labour intensive collecting old feed and if we feed it too little it affects cows productivity. This calculation is done by calculating how many cows are in the herd that day then predicting from weather forecasts whether the cows will spend the majority of the evening inside or out. ———————————————————————— We installed the FeedStar nearly 6 months ago, since then we’ve noticed higher intakes and we believe this is due to always having fresh food available without the need of a member of staff pushing up the feed 3 to 4 times a day and the fact they’re eating off a smooth surface. ———————————————————————— I’ve had many messages asking where we bought this FeedStar system, it is a German company called Eder. At Lodge Farm we love our toys! Our Lely robots are now up and running!
