My first official #honeyharvest and the maiden voyage of our homemade extractor. It's a wooden frame that clamps bee frames in place and is spun by a hand drill in an old brewing fermenter. A bit sketchy, the extractor needs some work but we did get honey out of hive and into jar so overall success! Blew the foundation out of a couple frames, and for fear that the bees might have trouble repairing this late in the season we only extracted 4 of the 8 frames we could have. Need to figure out how long to spin them and how fast because we probably only got 1/3-1/2 of the homey out of each frame. That's alright though, the rest goes back in the hive for the winter!

We stumbled across thousands of bees on a fence post! Many colonies are outgrowing their hives this time of year. When this happens, a large portion of the bees will form a group (swarm) and look for a new home. Swarms are fairly docile and will eventually move on so please don't call an exterminator! Wrapped up some bees today; it's about time right?! Got all the hives moved to the home yard where they'll winter over. First time moving love hives so that was an adventure! Winter entrance reducers are in, #quiltboxes on, and insulation wrapped. Once I've got them all finished I'll push 4 gives together and wrap them all together and we'll put a common lid on groups of 4 hives. Hopefully this will help insulate them even better than what we've done in previous seasons!

Snuck a peek at my little Saskatraz nuc tonight.. I thought I had squished the queen but may have just been honey bound.. gave them a second 5 frame super a week ago to see what would happen. It looks like they are building comb right up to the top so will have to open them up tomorrow and look for a queen...
