@timtronckoe ALISSA WHITE-GLUZ as Marie Antoinette, photographed for PORTRAITS . One trip to East Asia and it’s easy to see why people become so fascinated with it. Apparently, this is nothing new. During the Rococo period (one of my favourite eras in art history), European artists developed a taste for it too and began including “Chinoiserie” in their paintings, sculptures and interior design, sometimes dedicating entire rooms to the aesthetic, as seen behind me, here. Most likely due to increasing trade with the Far East, interest in the Orient grew more popular during the 18th century, leading to European imitations of Asian art or seemingly out of place decor in an otherwise harmonious setting. The look was new, exciting and fascinating to monarchs, historians and artists alike, which is why you will often see strange mashups of Late Baroque extravagance with almost caricature-like representations of Chinese imagery!
