Day 5 of my #AlmondCowZeroWaste challenge may seem a bit out there but, I mean, if I can do it literally anyone can because I’m the least crafty person imaginable! Day 3 of my #AlmondCowZeroWaste challenge is toiletries. Can you tell I’m just a little obsessed with @lushcosmetics . There are so many stores these days offering zero-plastic options these days, and they are actually way less harsh on your hair and skin. Next time you run out of shampoo, try out a shampoo bar! In addition to zero waste shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bars are reusable pots and tins like these ones from Lush. When you’re done, just rinse it out and return to the store or keep it to use for something else! Plus the tin jars are excellent for travelling! Pictured here are my reusable makeup remover pad, my face soap (which is sooooo incredibly soothing on my rosacea!) a bath bomb, a face mask and my lotion bar! Day 7 of my #AlmondCowZeroWaste challenge: go vegan When you cut out animal products, you automatically reduce your use of plastic products. Meat comes wrapped in Saran Wrap and styrofoam. Yogurt, cream cheese, and some egg brands come in plastic containers. In Canada, milk comes in plastic bags, which come in bigger plastic bags. Obviously, there are plenty of vegan foods wrapped in plastic: bread, soy alternatives, frozen fruit, etc. However, by reducing or eliminating animal products, you can greatly reduce the amount of plastic sitting in your kitchen. Day 6 of my #AlmondCowZeroWaste challenge is to swap out your sponges, scrubbies, and single-use towelettes! So far, I’ve stopped using sponges or towelettes for wiping down the kitchen counters and instead use a washcloth that can simply be washed and reused when needed, instead of getting thrown in the trash! I’ve also cut up an old t-shirt for dust rags instead of using paper towels! Happy Day! While it should be Earth day every day, take some extra time to appreciate our earth today. I got to spend the morning in the water, educating people about our beautiful fish. Then, I got to go lecture our next generation of scientists. Get outside- enjoy it, clean up, make sustainable choices... As you likely know, I've been posting tips, tricks and products daily to try to stay accountable and hopefully inspire others to be a bit more eco-friendly as well. I've been so inspired by people's messages and feel so grateful for the encouragement & tips from others! I'm also really grateful for companies, like @almondcow , for producing eco-friendly products and promoting #eco-conscious and #zerowaste lifestlyes. We all need more of this. I'm nowhere near perfect and am learning daily, but love the accountability and help from my friends and companies I support. Translation (just in case you didn’t catch all that): “Happy Earth Day month! I like cloth diapers. On my bum.” - <> - I used to only picture the white things (people use as burp rags) that my FACS teacher used to demonstrate the “dunk and swish” method in middle school. Last year on Earth Day (huge sale alert!) we pulled the trigger and bought (the new, updated version of) cloth diapers, admittedly to save $ in the beginning, but then, we actually fell in love! There all kinds of tricks that make them easier than I ever imagined possible and all kinds of benefits to make them better than I even realized! Not the least of which is earlier potty training... TBD. No Mom shame if cloth isn’t your thing- there are so many other ways to be green- but if you’ve got babes, they are definitely something to consider! - Ps- I’ve been meaning to share our story for a while, so thanks @almondcow for the prompt!
