I found out last night I still have internalised transphobia to deal with. I started reading a new book about Goddess’ and the Divine Feminine, in the first chapter I could feel a sense of discomfort. l felt like the book wasn’t for me, like I didn’t deserve to read something so exclusively for and about women. Then I had a very toxic thought:⁣ ⁣ ‘If I looked more like a woman it’d be okay’⁣ ⁣ Yeah. That’s not okay. Maybe it was the recent transphobic messages I’ve had, my dysphoria flaring up, or old insecurities about my appearance, but that’s a messed up thought and absolutely not true.⁣ ⁣ My gender is not decided by my appearance, nobody’s is. I’m a woman because I know I am a woman. It doesn’t matter what I look like. How I conform or challenge cisnormative expectations is irrelevant to the validity of my gender. I absolutely believe that all the way down to my bones. ⁣ ⁣ And yet, I’m clearly still wrestling with feeling inadequate because a part of me doesn’t feel I’m pretty enough.⁣ ⁣ I don’t blame myself for feeling this way, even though I know it’s wrong. Representations of women don’t look like me, they don’t share my jawline, deep eyes, prominent brow, or body shape. That message is bound to slip through the cracks and into my insecurities when it’s already something I’m sensitive about, even if it’s the opposite of my worldview.⁣ ⁣ In a way I’m glad I had that nonsense thought yesterday, because it’s brought this issue to the surface. Now that I know it’s there I can deal with it. ⁣ ⁣ Oh and I’m not going to stop reading the book either, because it is for me.
