Man-made fire burns recently cleared rainforest 20 kilometers south of the Amazon River, approximately 40 km southeast of Manaus in October 2018. Recently released satellite imagery data from the Brazilian rainforest conservation NGO Imazon showed a loss of 216,900 hectares of rainforest between August 2018 and April of this year. To give a number like that some context for what it means for global warming and CO2 emissions, a study by Australian National University estimates that each hectare of tropical rainforest stores 250 metric tons of carbon. So since the EPA estimates the average US automobile emits 1.38 metric tons of carbon in a year (or 181.15 cars/hectare of tropical rainforest), that means the Amazon rainforest lost in eight months was the equivalent of the emissions from ***39 million*** American cars for one year. Since Brazil's new executive leadership has made the exploitation of the Amazon a high priority and believes that climate change is a "Marxist plot," the amount of deforestation is likely to increase, sadly. We can still vote with our wallets, however. We made it to Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, on the Amazon River. . Iquitos is known for its plant medicine markets and retreats, for its ceviches and fresh fish, and for being the largest city in the world that cannot be reached by road, only by water or air. . We thought it would be crawling with tourists but it was a hugely local vibe, which gave us an incredibly authentic Amazonian experience, which was great, seeing as we’d just come from another authentic experience in Ecuador. . My (Nicole) parents met us in Lima and are hostages on our Peruvian adventure! We really wanted to show them a snapshot of our jungle life and Iquitos delivered. . At the artisan market we found a shaman who also makes jewelry (and we found out that shamans have legal certification in Iquitos). Here he’s performing a rapé tabacco ceremony on John. It was a respiratory cleanse, it felt wonderful. . We only had 4 nights here and it was not long enough, but we really got into the local cultures and even met a few crazy animals. . Hoje é dia do cerâmista, um momento de honrar essa antiga arte compartilhada por tantos povos. Na cultura Huni Kuin as mulheres é que são as responsáveis pela preservação desse oficio milenar. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Trabalham quase sempre juntas, vão buscar a argila especifica que geralmente é encontrada na beira de rios e igarapés na mata. Antes de retirar a argila para levá-la até a aldeia, canta-se uma música pedindo permissão ao espírito do barro.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Com a argila em mãos, faz-se a mistura com areia fina da beira do rio e amalgama-se o barro. Nesse processo as Mestras mais experientes orientam as outras sobre as proporções da mistura.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A partir daí começa a modelagem.
