Posted @withrepost • @ganeshraghunathan In 2016 @bidapa and I went to see a gaur that had died the previous evening close to the forest. We were thrilled to see dholes feeding on the carcass. Much later @bidapa spotted the leopard up on a tree with two dholes at the base. It was evident that the dholes were waiting for the leopard to climb down. The leopard however waited it out and the dogs moved away to rest with their bellies full. Seizing the opportunity, the leopard made a quick descent and ran into the forest. The dogs went in pursuit, only to return sniffing the patch the leopard had run on. "Anna, Tusker!", exclaimed my friend as he shook my shoulders and interrupted my communion with the clouds. I was lying down next to the gurgling stream, getting lost in the thoughts of my own when it all happened suddenly. . I had little time to react, and as I stood up, there he was. Walking towards us. Gentle and majestic. A handsome bull. It's beyond words to describe the feeling of seeing a wild, majestic being like him, while on foot. . I was shaking with exhilaration, when my instinct kicked in to manage a picture before getting out of his way. He was coming head on and we were right in his path. I realised my camera settings didn't suit the light that had gone down significantly since I last clicked a picture. I re-adjusted the ISO quickly to manage a not-so-shaky picture. He had gotten a bit closer by then. . I should've put down the camera and paced back to my car but realizing it could became uncomfortably close for both of us, the gentle giant turned away, passed through an inconvenient slope, before venturing into the forest patch nearby. . I felt bad. As exciting as it was, we felt sorry for blocking his path that evening. But he proved to be gentle and sensible to avoid an uncomfortable situation. I remembered TR Shankar Raman's apology to the Iyerpadi Gentleman, (look up the article in google) as I drove back, pondering about what had just happened.
