Anna and the Apocalypse (2017/18) ____ A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven - at Christmas - forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other. ____ Written by: Alan McDonald & Ryan McHenry. Directed by: John Mcphail. ____ I've wanted to watch this film for ages; the concept of a Zombie musical was awesome- fortunately it didn't disappoint. The plot (although simple and at times not entirely original) is mostly well written and is quite funny; it also isn't afraid to get emotional and dark, and when it does, it works. The film delivers well on a few emotive moments with sentimental themes of sticking with and fighting for friends and family. The plot would not be as good if it wasn't for the unique concept of a "Zom-com" musical; there are some really great songs here that are very catchy. If I had to choose my top three songs I would pick "Human Voice", "Hollywood Ending" and "Turning my Life around". The film is inventive in many other ways with some creative moments of action and some imaginative zombie kills. The cinematography is great for an indie film, with some really interesting camera maneuvers; occasionally it can seem a little amateur, but this is excusable. The cast of main protagonists are great; they carry the story really well with both their likeable acting and their singing. But, there are a few minor flaws: I'm not really a big fan of villian; don't get me wrong, he was funny, but he was way too over the top (which clashed with the emotional moments) and his motivations didn't make sense. Another small problem I had was that sometimes the music was entirely out of sync with the actors; also the film can sometimes feel a tad bit cheesy.
