Awww, look at Baby Lexy!!! Going through old photos for bureaucratic, not-fun stuff... BUT the fun stuff (and slightly weird) is how viscerally these photos bring me back to a particular point in my life... .
.
These photos were taken around the same few weeks in 2016, when I was about to graduate college (actually, the first picture is taken on the day I graduated!). I studied fashion design at Parsons (yep, my background is fashion!), which was a completely bizarre experience. I was making such wacky, "anti-fashion" things throughout the whole program, which really didn't "fit in" with most of my classmates' work. I was just making things I felt like I needed to create -- which eventually manifested into #kookerville (my final fashion thesis). I didn't expect any recognition as a fashion weirdo, and I was genuinely SHOCKED that it received such positive feedback from the fashion department (ermmm, photos 1,2,3 -- the Kookers showcased at a graduate show; photo 4 -- presenting my work to fashion industry folks (lol) as a finalist for "Designer of the Year;" photo 5 -- Boppity Bip Bop at Saks Fifth Avenue Window Display (lol!))
.
.
Like many college grads, I felt such a wave of uncertainty of what my future would look like and how the hell I would turn this into a career?!?!? Never would have thought the Kookers would have lead me to incredible residencies, shows, and teaching oppourtunities...! .
.
Not sure why I'm doing such a long ramble - I guess a lot of my followers don't actually know me in real life, so I thought I'd share a bit more today, as going through all my work has put me in a reflective mood. I guess this is to say... Despite the uncertainty and not-fitting-in (which is true to a lot of my life), it's all lead me to where I am... I am SOOOOO grateful for all the oppourtunities I've had in these past few years. Not conforming and making things from the heart has lead me to the most incredible projects and people. Thank you thank you thank you! Sooo... KEEP ON MAKING, as authentically and honestly as possible, Baby Lexy, Current Lexy, and everyone else who managed to read this far! Magic happens! ✨

Today’s Inspiration: Rei Kawakubo
Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese haute couture designer based in Paris and Tokyo. Born in 1942, Kakawkubo is best known for her line Comme des Garçons (like a youth) a fashion design company she opened in 1979. In 1981 CdG debuted in Paris, and in 2017 the label was the theme of that year’s Met Gala, “Rei Dover Street Market /Commes des Garçons, Art of the In-Between.”•Not formally trained in apparel design, Kakawkubo studied fine arts in school and began to work as a stylist around 1967, eventually beginning to design her own clothing. CdG epitomizes the concept of Anti-Fashion, a term that basically means designs that are the opposite of current mainstream fashion trends. By 1980, CdG had over 100 locations in Japan, more than 90 employees and was bringing in more than $30 million in revenue per year. •Kawakubo is known for her deconstructed designs, distressed fabrics, asymmetric cuts, and dark or muted palettes of color. (Though there is more use of bright color in later years) Her clothes blend seemingly contrasting design elements like tailoring and frayed edges. Over the decades since the brand’s inception, Kawakubo increased her use of color, beginning to use textile patterns and bright primary colors. All of CdG’s pieces are made by hand, a policy the brand (and its creator) are passionate about. The bespoke nature of the clothing produced by Kawakubo (and her team) is intended to both support textile manufacturers and traditional craftspeople (most all of the clothing is manufactured in Japan) but also to maintain the exceptional quality and value of the brand. •The 2017 shows were said to be the last that Kawakubo would be personally running (she was 74), though room was left in the statement from the label for its creator to remain actively involved in the design process. •
