Excited to (sort of) be participating in this "F*** This is Hard: April Arm Balance Challenge!" from @AumYogaAnnArbor! As many of you know, I recently started a new job in Ann Arbor. The area has grown on me so much, and I can't WAIT to move there in August! I'm definitely looking forward to checking out Aum Yoga and thought this challenge would be a great place to start.

Day 1 of our F*** This is Hard: April Arm Balance Challenge is #chaturangadandasana.
The Sanskrit word Chaturanga Dandasana means Four Limbed Staff Pose. This is one of the most elusive transitions/postures of the Ashtanga-Vinyasa tradition. Understanding the anatomy and alignment of Chaturanga Dandasana is essential to both practicing Ashtanga-Vinyasa Yoga and approaching arm balances + inversions. Chaturanga Dandasanda is not a beginner’s posture. It is important that you are keeping your shoulders safe during strength training drills and in the full execution of this pose.
Practice, practice, practice! A solid chaturanga engages the #bandhas and is extremely linear! When lowering from #plank the shoulders slightly protract over the wrists as you follow a forward then down motion. As you lower, the elbows graze the sides of the rib cage with the triceps, deltoids, and latissimus dorsi all engaged. Bending the elbows to ninety degrees helps to only lower half way down. There should still be plenty of room between you and the floor so that you can complete the vinyasa by pulling forward and through to either #cobra or #updog!
