Ssgt Herbert ‘Frosty’ Frost from Alhambra, Los Angeles, CA was killed in action on June 21st 1968, 5 days before his 32nd birthday. He was on his 3rd tour of Vietnam and served as a member of a LRRP unit with Company E, 75th Infantry Regiment (Rangers), 9th Infantry Division, at the time of his death. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, VA and is honoured on Panel 22W Line 106, on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient John F. Basilone was one of the first Marines to be awarded the Medal of Honor during World War II. On Sunday night October 25, 1942, at Lunga Ridge on Guadalcanal, about 1000 yards south of Henderson Field, Japanese troops attacked. One of the Marine section leaders facing them was Sergeant Basilone. Basilone stayed with his men, repairing guns and changing barrels in almost total darkness, while giving encouragment to his men. One section of guns were overrun. Two men killed, three others wounded. Basilone took one of his guns on his back and raced for the breach in the line. Eight Japanese were surprised andkilled. The guns were jammed by mud and water and a few yards away the Japanese were forming for another charge. Frantically stripping mud from the ammo belts men fed them into the guns as Basilone cleared jams and sprayed troops rushing at his positions with fixed bayonets and hand grenades. At 0300 a final Banzai charge took place. The full weight of the fanatical Japanese fell on Basilone and his men. He had set up a cross fire which smashed the charge. At least 38 dead Japanese were credited to Sergeant Basilone -many killed with his Colt .45. Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was killed leading his heavy machine gun squad off the beach on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. He had just helped destroy an enemy blockhouse before he was hit by a mortar shell. He was the only Marine to be awarded both The Medal Of Honor and The Navy Cross during World War II. John F. Serving as Escort Commander in Arlington National Cemetery for our Nation’s fallen Heroes, has impressed upon me an entirely deeper understanding of God, Family and Country, and how it pertains to the fragility of life on earth. We had the honor of attending my Grand Aunt Ruthie McGoldrick’s funeral. She was laid to rest with her dear husband, and Major General Frank McGoldrick in Arlington near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Monday. It was so important to us that the kids witness a military service and show respect to those who have given so much so that we could be free! After the service we got to visit the Washington Monument, walk the Tidal Basin, the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Monument, and the Korean War Memorial.
