The Knight Campus of the Community College of Rhode Island, aka CCRI. Its creation caused a huge debate locally about the merits of Brutalism, the groups fell in love or hate with little compromise, reminiscent of opposing opinions about Marcel Breuer’s museum on Madison Avenue NYC. Brutalism was widely seen as an undisguised import from Europe and while Breuer’s Whitney Museum (now the Met Breuer) was a fascinating concrete challenge to the monumental glass and steel skyscrapers of Manhattan, the Knight Campus, to do its job of bringing all university departments under a single roof, is a colossus and visitors didn’t get the same counterintuitive sense of slim pilotis sustaining a concrete structure. Many people associated a college campus with quiet quads populated with trees and formed by ivy clad buildings. But such is the lot of brutalist architecture, to serve an important purpose and to challenge received wisdom with new design solutions.
