It’s a Gorgeous day in #Dakar today but it was raining in #Venice the other week, scrolling through my photos I realized I forgot to post this from the opening of the #BiennaleArte2019 @labiennale #ArthurJafa @anamibia winning the Golden Lion for best artist in the main exhibition at the 58th #VeniceBiennale For three decades Arthur Jafa has developed a dynamic practice across mediums such as film, sculpture and performance. Throughout his career, he has been invested in specifically black modes of expressivity, and the challenge of how to render the world (visually, conceptually, culturally, idiomatically) from the vantage of black being – in all of its joy, horror, beauty, pain, virtuosity, alienation, power and magic. "Fragments of a Crucifixion" at the MCA Chicago is a small but brilliant exhibition, curated by Chanon Kenji Praepipatmongkol. My friends @tbworley and @millinerd and I had the pleasure of seeing the show with Kenji, who told us that this exhibition grew out of a desire to take more seriously the complicated (and constructive) ways that contemporary artists are thinking about Christianity in relation to race, violence, and mortality -- and he was especially prompted to think in this direction by Arthur Jafa's video work "Love is the Message, The Message is Death" (2016), which is also currently showing at MCA. The interactions between the works are evocative and densely layered, and the wall texts are unusually helpful (and unusually bold) in bringing background points of reference into view (I've included one here as an example>>).
