In addition to bowls and stools, I also have a thing for mortars. Especially this large one from Sweden circa 1700. A staple in the Swedish kitchen, these individually crafted mortars were used for crushing spices. If you take a whiff you can still imagine the odor of cardamom as a grandma bakes Småkakor or Kardemummakaka. It is available in Los Angeles with its pestle. #available #mortar #antiques #sweden #patina #wabisabi #artifact #artifacts #galerieprovenance @_tobymitchell
UPDATE: SOLD - Another Valkyrie necklace - a dream finally realised in which I use ancient bronze nails amongst other stunning artifacts for a collar! Some of the nails are exquisite in the way they were made from folded bronze with a flap at the top to form the head! There are also fabulous Labadorite wire wrapped drops between the fragments - Labadorite is associated with the spirit world and therefore seems incredibly perfect for a necklace worn by the Valkyries. This one is called Einherjar, after the men killed in battle who were led to Valhalla by the Valkyries.

Statue of the Lector Priest Kaaper.
The Lector Priest Kaaper, known as Sheikh el-Belad, from his Mastaba C8 in North Saqqara.
This statue is made from sycamore “nhA.t” wood, eyes made from rock crystal rimmed with copper “iwhw”/ “hmty”.
At the time of its discovery by Auguste Mariette, an unpopular mayor in the village had died, and when the local workmen looked into the eyes of this statue they believed that he had returned. Thus, Mariette dubbed it the Sheikh el-Balad, The Headman of the Village.
Old Kingdom, 5th Dynasty, ca. 2494-2345 BC. Egyptian “kmt” Museum, Cairo.

A short video I made last summer showing off three artifacts we found at the “Eastern Front” battlefields of WWII. Ofcourse the most notable of the three is the StG-44 (MP-44). Externally the Sturmgewehr was mostly complete. The only part missing is the stock. There’s alot missing internally though, such as the bolt and the spring. We did not find these items in the region but suspect they must still be out there somewhere, or they have been picked up by someone during or shortly after the war. The reason these parts were taken out of the firearm was so that whoever found the weapon after it was discarted (in this case the Soviet Army) would not be able to use it.

There’s also a Russian helmet resting on a copper 7,62 cm Pak 36 (R) casing. The Pak 36 (R) was a German anti-tank gun used by the Wehrmacht during WWII. These guns were basically Russian guns captured and converted into the Pak 36 (R). During Operation Barbarossa the German military had a hard time knocking out Russian heavy tanks, such as the KV or T-34, with their standard issue anti-tank guns. Germany had already come up with a suitable design (which would become the 7,5cm Pak 40). Unfortunately for them, the first pieces would arrive in 1942; too late. Until that time, the German military would have to come up with a solution themselves. Luckily for them they were able to capture a huge amount of Russian weaponry, including approximately 1.300 M1936 F-22 guns, in the early stages of Barbarossa. These guns, along with the ZiS-3, were ‘transformed’ into the 7,62 cm Pak 36 (R). We find lots of these casings on the Eastern Front of 1944-1945, proving they were still used in the final stages of WW2.
