Born in St.Petersburg in 1980, Anton Chumak developed his own technique, neither drawing nor painting but something in between. He draws on canvasses with charcoal or pencil and fills out the background with black acrylic paint. His series “Temple of Fire” was dedicated to mysterious visions of imaginary architecture, while in his new project “Battle for the Crops,” he reworks the vocabulary of Soviet visual propaganda. In his illusionistic pseudo-bas-reliefs, he ironically re-imagines the Soviet cult of industry and agriculture: there are railroads and airplanes and ripe crops galore, and some winged griffins to boot. Chumak's works are ornamental and harmonious, like the frescoes of Pompeii — a subtle and elegant farewell to a vanished empire. ‘Music’ forms a pair to ‘The Dance’, Both painted by Henri Matisse for Sergey Shchukin in 1910. The central idea of these paintings is man's self-realisation through passionate immersion in creativity. ‘Music’ is built up of the same three elements as ‘The Dance’: the same use of green, red and blue, with five figures of musicians and singers in parallel with the five dancers. Whereas the dancing figures celebrate life through dynamic movement, ‘Music’ celebrates concentrated calm and meditative pleasures.
