Not everything is always ☀️ and ❤️... last year was the hardest year of my family’s life. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and passed away 6 short weeks later. She was our rock and words can’t describe how much we miss her. When I was asked to paint the bathroom stalls in my school, I was already overwhelmed trying to balance school with everything that was going on at home. Planning and prepping the doors took so much time that I was a little burnt out before I really even got started. But then... I started painting. I was alone (which as a teacher and a mom, that never happens), listening to music, drinking coffee, and simply making art. Painting these doors was healing. It gave me time and space to reflect on the past few months. It gave me the chance to put a little more light into the world, after feeling in the dark for so long. It gave me the reminder of why I became an art teacher. Art is important... it is so powerful. As art teachers, it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of teaching... but let’s not forget that what we are doing is making a difference! Art gives kiddos a safe place for them to express whatever is in their heart and we get to provide them the means to do that. I don’t know that I can love this view any harder. . Yesterday we celebrated the launch of my book, Play Make Create, a Process Art Handbook. . I felt so much love from everyone around me that I swear I almost levitated right off our sparkle confetti floors. .
