ALBERTO BURRI ▪️ Sacco (sack) | 1956 | @galleriadelloscudo ▪️ Everyone wants to get a detail shot of Burri! ▪️ Alberto Burri was an Italian artist known for his use of non-traditional materials. This painting is a part of the artist’s “Sacco” (sacks) series, in which he stitched, patched, and painted on rough burlap bags. They are the earliest works by Burri and arguably his most important. What makes the “Sacco” works so special, however, is their incredible backstory… ▪️ Burri studied medicine until the outbreak of World War II, when he served in the Italian army (oy vey) as a doctor. Captured by the Americans in Tunisia, Burri was sent to Camp Howze in Texas as a prisoner of war, where he began painting on pieces of discarded burlap. After his release in 1946, Burri moved to Rome where his art practice turned toward abstraction. By the early 1950s, he embarked on the “Sacco” series, embracing the burlap materials he used at Camp Howze. Burri’s interest in unconventional materials continued with experiments using wood, tar, plastic, zinc, and fabric. ▪️ In 1960, his work was shown at the Venice Biennale (where I’m going next) and won the Critics Prize. A few years later, Burri’s first museum retrospective was held at MFA Houston — in the same state where he was held in as a prisoner of war. I suppose the location was fitting, since Burri’s career literally came full circle. ▪️ Lastly, I think Burri’s art achieves a near-impossible balance of delicacy and brutality that’s especially interesting considering the backdrop of post-war Europe.
