April 10, 1959 – Wedding of Emperor Akihito of Japan and Michiko Shōda In August 1957, Akihito met Michiko Shōda on a tennis court at Karuizawa near Nagano. The Imperial Household Council (a body composed of the Prime Minister of Japan, the presiding officers of the two houses of the Diet of Japan, the Chief Justice of Japan, and two members of the Imperial family) formally approved the engagement of the Crown Prince to Michiko Shōda on 27 November 1958. At that time, the media presented their encounter as a real "fairy tale", or the "romance of the tennis court". It was the first time a commoner would marry into the Imperial Family, breaking more than 2,600 years of tradition. The announcement about the then-Crown Prince Akihito's engagement and marriage to the then-Ms. Michiko Shōda drew opposition from traditionalist groups, because Shōda came from a Roman Catholic family. Although Shōda was never baptized, she was educated in Catholic schools and seemed to share the faith of her parents. Rumors also speculated that Empress Kōjun had opposed the engagement. After the death of Empress Kōjun in 2000, Reuters reported that she was one of the strongest opponents of her son's marriage, and that in the 1960s, she had driven her daughter-in-law and grandchildren to depression by persistently accusing her of not being suitable for her son. The marriage tool place on 10 April 1959. The Emperor and Empress have three children: sons Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan (formerly The Prince Hiro) and Fumihito, Prince Akishino (formerly The Prince Aya) and daughter Mrs. Sayako Kuroda (formerly The Princess Nori).

December 9, 1963 – Birth of Masako Owada, wife of Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan. Masako is the wife of Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan, who is the eldest son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko and the heir apparent to the Chrysanthemum Throne. She is a member of the Imperial House of Japan through marriage. Should the Crown Prince ascend the throne as expected upon his father's abdication, Masako will become empress consort. Princess Masako has suffers from emotional disorders due to the pressure to produce a male heir and adjusting to life in the Imperial Family. In late 2001, she gave birth to her only child, a daughter: Aiko, Princess Toshi. The birth of a daughter, which occurred more than eight years after their marriage, sparked lively debate in Japan about whether The Imperial Household Law of 1947 should be changed from that of agnatic primogeniture to either cognatic or absolute primogeniture, which would allow a woman to succeed to the Chrysanthemum Throne. A government-appointed panel of experts submitted a report on 25 October 2005, recommending that the Imperial Succession Law be amended to permit absolute primogeniture. Plans to change the male-only law of Imperial succession were shelved after it was announced in February 2006 that Masako's brother-in-law and his wife, Prince and Princess Akishino, were expecting their third child. On 6 September 2006, Princess Akishino gave birth to a son, Hisahito, who is third-in-line to the Chrysanthemum Throne under the current law, after his uncle, the Crown Prince, and his father, Prince Akishino. #japaneseroyalty #japaneseroyals #emperorakihito #empressmichiko #princeakishino #crownprincenaruhito #masakoowada #crownprincessofjapan #asianroyalty #asianroyals #royals #royalty #chrysanthemumthrone #imperialhouseofjapan
