Sooooo… my friend @catherinehong100 and I are the hosts of a new podcast called K-Pod! Brought to you by the people at @KoreanAmericanStory, we follow in their mission of creating and preserving the stories of the Korean American experience. K-Pod will highlight Koreans in arts and culture and the first episode is launching very soon. Catherine and I met in 1986, during a high school summer school program at Exeter Academy. It’s truly wonderful that 33 years after we first met, and after decades in the magazine business in our respective fields (she’s a writer/editor and I’m a photographer) we get to work together and share the stories of people we are excited about. Stay tuned for info on the first episode! @janicekaramchung . . . . . . #koreanamericanstory #kpod #asianvoices #asianstories #koreanvoices #koreanstories #podcasts

“I deeply believe the invisibility of API is a result of the "Model Minority Myth." This myth perpetuates seemingly positive stereotypes about API, but causes individual and societal harm (and also strategically placed a wedge between Asian and Black communities.) Our history is often absent from curriculum, and students are neither educated about the racial struggles API have faced and continue to face to this day, nor of the resilience and leadership of API in American history. As educators, we are responsible for seeking out information and knowledge about the different histories and stories of our country in order to make sure all of our students feel seen and heard.” . . — Liz Kleinrock @teachandtransform from her patreon post “Asian Pacific American Heritage Month” (+ a brilliant resource section for further learning) | Link in bio

In defense of our asian parents who shoved food on our plates and never said “I love you.” And we misunderstood that as cold but that was love and family and all things good. We just couldn’t see it then. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #aapi #asianparentsbelike #asianamerican #asiansbelike #asianvoices #heritage #chineseamerican #lovequotes #instalove #asianrepresentation #representationmatters #asianlove #growingupwithstrictparents #chinesefamily #girlswhowrite

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and in honor of this I'd like to share a small piece of my family's #AsianAmericanStory. ❤️ I was born and raised in the Washington, DC area. My parents met each other through a mutual friend at the Kentucky Derby. At the time, they were both graduate students attending Midwest colleges in the 1960s. My mom was a University of Louisville Cardinal, and my dad was an Ohio State University Buckeye. They fell in love, got married, had my brother in Columbus, OH, then moved to DC for my dad's new job (and also to be closer to our family that came to America after the fall of Saigon), and then a couple years later....I was born! I am a second-generation #VietnameseAmerican, and the daughter of two hardworking #AsianAmericanParents who have always emphasized the importance of both education and having fun in equal measure. I grew up eating just as many cheeseburgers as I did cha gio and banh beo. And I played with My Little Ponies and Transformers while my grandparents watched "Paris By Night" on full blast in the living room. As I look back on the life I've had so far and the opportunities and experiences that have shaped me into who I am today, I am thankful most of all for my #AsianAmericanFamily. With the help of my grandparents, aunties, and uncles, my parents were able to build a happy home for me and my brother here in #America. They taught us about #VietnameseTradition and #Asian respect, and they have always encouraged us to embrace our #VietnameseHeritage alongside our #AmericanCulture. I grew up speaking #Vietnamese, French, and English at home, and my #MultiCultural upbringing is why I am proud to not only be #American but especially #AsianAmerican. This is what #AAPI Heritage Month means to me, and this #FBF picture of me celebrating my first birthday in an #AoDai represents (to me) what it's like to embrace my #VietnameseCulture in #AsianAmerica. Sometimes I get very very sad. When you report on Asian America, you cannot expect empathy or validation from newsrooms because no one gets us. Conservatives, liberals, fkn everyone in between. It’s lonely. But I hope we all keep in mind that we don’t do it for them. We do it all for our community. I don’t think I should have to justify my work. I shouldn’t have to scream “hey why isn’t this shit getting more attention!?” But it’s getting late. I had feelings. This is why I do anything nowadays. My love letter to asian America. I’m tired all the time now. But I remember why I need to be. It’s all worth it. You probably can’t even read this shit. “Did you really take the last soup dumpling?” . “Gweilo did you fr just scream ‘ni hao’ at me?” . “Do you actually think you’ll live after asking if my pussy’s sideways?” . “Do you actually think you can drink more soju than I can?” . Lolol happy #apahm friends. Yesterday was the first day and we paid homage to the digital media pioneer @angryasianman. Phil Yu’s impact on #aapi media is indisputable. Back before Twitter campaigns like #StarringJohnCho actually effected change, when Jackie Chan’s character in a comically wacky film like “Rush Hour 2” colored the dominant American perception of Asians, Yu started to call shit out. Check out the story in my bio. It's AAPI Heritage Month, and I’m proud to celebrate the vast diversity of our community. The “model minority” myth suggests all of us are the same, but we are not monolithic. Today we come together to acknowledge the need for better representation, because we are #PhenomenallyAsian. T-shirt by @phenomenal.ly benefits @NAPAWF, which builds power with AAPI women & girls. . . On another note, check out the coverage coming from @huffpostasianvoices ! We’re publishing a ton of cool ass shit throughout the month to celebrate the Asian identity. ✌ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #asianvoices #aapi #asianamerican #asiansbelike #representationmatters #media #phenomenallyasian #asiangirls #chineseamerican #femaleempowerment #womenempowerment #bossbitch
