How often do I rejoice in my talents but not recognize the talents of those around me? Or praise others and dismiss the love they desire to show me? We often recognize talents in ourselves or others, not both. I believe Jesus has a desire to rejoice in it all. So why do we dismiss what He says to us through others and what He has others say to us? 'it's easy to preach self love/acceptance looking the way you do.' a phrase I've read on many profiles, including my own. I get how it may be an easy assumption, but if there is one thing we should have learned by now - don't assume shit, just don't. it's not helpful, it's not fair and it's judgmental. let me be brutally honest - I know some people get more appearance-based compliments than others, but the amount of compliments we get doesn't mirror how we feel about ourselves, not deep down where it matters. compliments don't heal illnesses. they don't fix self-doubts, persistant insecurities or traumatic experiences, which can massively affect our souls and how we process information. being in touch with yourself, nurturing yourself is a process. for everyone. we don't know what someone has been through and how much work that person puts into feeling comfortable in their own skin. we don't know if a person could be suffering from pain or old wounds that keep on bleeding. we simply don't know and we shouldn't pretend otherwise. 'prettiness', as subjective as it is, doesn't protect from harm. who wants to be judged based on their looks, judged in general? I know I don't, but it happens anyways. my therapist also shared this with me; it's necessary to break free from depending on other peoples validation. it's an addictive and destructive cycle that won't satisfy you and keeps you chasing for more. there is nothing wrong with accepting compliments but they shouldn't be our fuel. they easily turn into quick fixes that leave us feeling like we're not enough, which creates a constant need for affirmations, when the source for confidence should be within ourselves. we see what we want to see and that's so damn obvious on social media. don't believe everything you think you see - a lesson all of us should learn. I can assure you I've worked hard on embracing myself after everything I've been through and I'll do my best to keep it that way and so should you #confidence #comparison #assumption #selflove #selfacceptance
