Same girl, 1 month apart.
The right is me creating my makeup looks over on my main page @thechristinamaria and the left is me in A&E last night with what’s been a downwards spiral with completely uncontrolled asthma after contracting a chest infection.
The not so glamorous side of my life isn’t one I used to share often before, but that’s why I created this space, somewhere for us all to feel we can be real and express our frustrations of living with chronic conditions. Somedays we can uplift and others... well... we just need to be heard.
I have been suffering with a chest infection for 3 weeks, and ever since I had whooping cough a few years ago, any minor cough virus I catch turns into a severe one and then into a chest infection which always seems to set my asthma off and the past week has been spent in and out of hospital. Last night I spent it in A&E with IV steroids and a nebuliser for what feels like the millionth time this week.
I wish I could say that there’s some magical medicine that’s going to help my lungs get out of this mess, but it doesn’t seem to be the case and I won’t be surprised if I end up back there in a few hours.
Asthma is no joke and it’s the scariest chronic condition I have, I thought I’d be used to it considering I’ve had it since I was 13 months old, but as it’s progressively getting worse I can’t help but feel so defeated.
If I’m not battling my lungs I’m battling the chronic cystitis and the M.E and I’m feeling beyond overwhelmed with it all. Somedays I think it’s ok to just say GAAAD DAMN IT I need a break from this body.
Sorry for such a negative post today but I like to keep it real on this page, and hope that it gives you the courage to be yourselves too even with chronic illness, not to be ashamed of having to say I am not ok, and most importantly to know that you are not alone.
A lot of people think that I’m a complete crazy person for loving the Arizona summer so much. When it’s 110°, I perk up and run out to play on the mountains.
Sadly, when the air is even a little bit chilly, I have issues breathing. I guess my sinuses swell in the cool air and end up causing an infection. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone out hiking or riding and ended up getting sick from it. I can immediately feel it happening and it’s definitely changed the way I do things outdoors.
When it’s hot, like really hot, I rarely have issues breathing (unless the air quality is super bad). I can finally push my limits on the mountains without worrying about an asthma attack or fear of spending the next couple days in bed.
Sadly, I haven’t even touched my bike since the temps fell below 80... riding seems to trigger me the worst. The mix of breathing hard and kicking up the dust is a terrible combo for this girl. I’ve tried the masks but they haven’t done the trick... uggh.
I’m ready for the heat!! I want to go out and play without having to bust out my inhaler or stopping in fear of triggering my asthma. Missing my summer rides with @faust6814 and @guerrilla_ak ...SOON!! #itsalmostpartytime

Cherry season starts this month, who’s with us face down in a bowl? The benefits of these delicious beauties are awesome, as they’re full of antioxidants and are proven to help painful inflammatory conditions.
-
The typical Western diet tends to be too high in protein, which can result in high levels of uric acid and elevated markers for inflammation – the cause of swelling, sensitivity, pain and redness involved in the seemingly unrelated conditions we’ve highlighted – asthma, eczema and rosacea.
-
But great news: eating cherries reduces the levels of uric acid in the urine according to a study in the Journal of Nutrition, 2003. In fact, eating 2 servings of sweet cherries led to a 15% reduction of uric acid, and nitric oxide and C-reactive protein levels – which are associated with inflammatory disease.
-
Another study in the same journal 10 years later concluded that eating cherries reduced some biomarkers associated with inflammatory diseases.
-
The powerful anthocyanins and carotenoids (antioxidants) and cell-renewing Vitamin C nourishment from cherries can help to ‘switch off’ damaging inflammatory pathways involved in asthma, eczema and rosacea. If you’re suffering from any of these conditions, cherries are surely a tasty way to help!
-
How to and other helpers:
Eat 1 serving of fresh cherries (about 20) first thing in the morning or 30min-1hr before meals. If you’re dealing with active inflammation, have 2 servings a day.
If you eat a lot of protein, or are under stress, this could be exacerbating your condition, try reducing protein – filling up instead on colourful vegetables and fruit, and try 10 mins of mindful breathing each morning to set yourself up for the day.
@OrganicBurst Acai Berry and Goji Berry are both fantastic sources of antioxidants and a perfect way to boost the effects of fresh cherries. Take 1-2 servings per day or try our Acai Cherry Smoothie Bowl. Go to our wellness hub www.chocandjuice.com and search ‘cherry’.

Most people who know me today probably aren't aware that I grew up with asthma and how much it dictated my life in my younger years. The common cold or flu would turn into a 3 month fight with a chest infection and regular visits to the emergency ward.
I was always told 'you might grow out of it' but by the time I hit 22, still using my inhalers day and night I'd pretty much given up hope on that.
A move to warmer climates certainly helped my cause and regular swimming/freediving training I suspect has played a major role as well. I still carry inhalers but for the majority of the last 10 years I've been able to avoid using them on a daily basis. I've even managed to dive in some of the coldest places on Earth where, growing up just the thought of diving under the ice would probably have given me an asthma attack!
Yesterday was #worldasthmaday so my message to those of you out there who are affected by asthma, you can still live a full and active lifestyle. Awareness, education and lifestyle choices can make a huge difference.
In my experience, there is little worse out there than struggling to breath each day. But, if it taught me nothing else, it taught me the value of each and every breath, and to make each one count!
This is a shot of me diving on one breath next to an iceberg in Antártica.
