Flash dance⁣ ✨ ⁣⠀ We now know that about three quarters of the deep-sea animals in the midwaters of the Monterey Bay are bioluminescent. Scientists at MBARI recently found a way to put this bioluminescence to use, showing that several groups of glowing marine organisms can be identified by the light they produce. By combining data from two existing oceanographic instruments—fluorometers and bathyphotometers—researchers can figure out what types of algae or glowing organisms are present. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ This jelly in the genus Aequorea is one of the many types of glowing organisms found in Monterey Bay. MBARI researchers recently showed that they can categorize some groups of algae and animals in the bay by the brightness and duration of their glow. Love your glow⁣ ✨✨ ⁣ One of MBARI’s institutional goals is to develop automated instruments for monitoring the ocean. Over the past two decades, MBARI engineers have developed a number of automated sensors that can measure the chemical properties of seawater (for example, ocean acidity and the concentration of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrate in seawater). However, designing automated instruments that can monitor life in the ocean has proven to be more difficult. New MBARI research showed that optical (light-based) sensors that can detect and identify marine algae and animals.⁣ ⁣ By measuring the color and amount of light in the water using sensors on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), researchers can determine the types and relatively abundance of animals present in the ocean during a survey. When chlorophyll concentrations were low, but there were short, low-intensity flashes of bioluminescence, the most common animals were likely to be small tadpole-like creatures called larvaceans. Ahoy! ⚓️ . MBARI’s advancing technology discovers sunken ship. Chief ROV pilot Knute Brekke worked on that boat over 23 years ago and helped find the wreck.⠀ ⠀ SWIPE ➡️ to see 3D imagery of the wreck and the multibeam sonar images captured with the mapping AUV. ⠀ ⠀ The shipwreck was first discovered when mapping the seafloor using MBARI’s automatous underwater vehicle during a survey off Santa Monica Bay. The screen shot of the multibeam soundings clearly resembles a ship like figure. A few months later when MBARI’s researchers returned to Santa Monica Bay in search of the sunken ship, the high-resolution maps lead them straight to the shipwreck. ⠀ ⠀ The wreck was identified as the American Heritage. It was reportedly sunk in spring of 1995. Twenty-three years later the wreck is heavily colonized by deep-sea sponges and other animals.
