Y'all remember a couple weeks ago when I posted that Violet has been broody and should I try to sneak some chicks underneath her? Well. Life had gotten too busy, and time got away from me, and I kept thinking Violet would give up and eventually get off of her nest. But if there is one thing you need to know about broody chickens, they don't give up! After over a month of her trying to hatch eggs, I finally got Violet some chicks! I barely slept at all the night I put them underneath her... I was so worried she was going to reject them and I would go out in the morning to find dead chicks. But that was not the case! Instead, I went out there and she was spread out flat as a pancake with one chick underneath each wing clucking happily to them. She's such a good mom so far, and I am glad I was able to make her happy!

Would you believe 6 years ago I rolled my eyes at my husband suggesting we get chickens? Now, I’m the one begging for more animals. We both have an intense desire to grow and raise our own food to feed our family and we’ve already taken steps in that direction and learned so much. It’s 1000% been a team effort. Yesterday was the July rain I wait for all year, the kind good enough to play outside in and brings rolling thunder along with it. It graciously broke both any humidity left in the air, and my tension headache. We all woke up to a cool breeze this morning and I weeded the garden without wanting to die. my heart is heavy as i write this post. a week ago i lost some of my beloved friends. they were attacked in the run, in broad daylight. lemon, the king, was presumably the first as he tried his best to protect the girls. the sweetest soul that ever was, i will miss you so he didn’t act much like a rooster but always kept a watchful eye on the girls — especially olive. while I’m devastated to have lost any of my birds, i’m especially feeling the loss of lemon and olive the flock will never be the same without them.

It takes me about until now to completely settle into summer. And it’s about now I begin forgetting the ice laden world that awaits us in six short months.
