Cooling off during the dog days of summer while swimming in a late 1920s black Jantzen swimsuit with red Bakelite buckle. Two art historical connections. The pose of a swimming girl holding a bowl in her outstretched hands is a motif appearing frequently on cosmetic objects in New Kingdom Egypt, a number of which were intended to hold perfumed unguents. The relatively high temperatures and perpetual low humidity of the Egyptian climate led the ancient Egyptians to become early masters of creams and perfumes for the skin (making the late 1910s Palmolive ads featuring women in Egyptianizing costumes and settings particularly appropriate). The nude but bejeweled swimming girl of ancient Egyptian cosmetic spoons is chosen as an Art Deco motif, as in the latch on some 1920s Egyptianizing purses (and since the purse certainly held cosmetics, this again is a surprisingly appropriate use). The Bakelite buckle on the swimsuit recalls the story of the forger Han van Meegeren who during the 1930s mixed ground Bakelite with his pigments in order to "age" surfaces of his now infamous forgeries that created a fictional early religious oeuvre for Vermeer. Placing the canvases within an oven hardened the Bakelite impregnated paints, creating a believable 300 year old craquelure.
