Went to the doctor today because, somehow, I injured myself while I was asleep. ‍♂️ Luckily, I’ve got a Spoonful of Sugar from @illuminatedbrewworks to help the medicine go down. I’m always wary of lactose sugar in IPA, because any IPA where sweetness is the primary flavor doesn’t often sit well with me. Thankfully, the sugar here is restrained, giving just a splash of sweetness to an otherwise typically bright and tropical IPA. Last month (I’m always late with these posts, sorry @shirtsontap I’ll get better I promise!) I received this awesome shirt form Flying Lion Brewing in Seattle! Family owned and operated since 2014 this place always has 15 rotating taps! Looking at their website I think my favorite thing would be their staff section. Seeing all of the posts (and pig heads) from @gueuzetilquin during Toer de Geuze takes us back to well before they participated in the event. This 37,5cl was bottled 10 Feb 2011, neck label 2010-2011. This is one of the blends from Tilquin's first commercial season, so it's a blend of just one and two year old lambic. Cork had some nice pressure behind it, but the carbonation faded away quickly into a somewhat thinner body. This blend is nowhere near as complex as the newer ones, but it's great to see the beginnings of a new blender here. Perhaps a bit on the tart side, but with a very fruity characteristic reminiscent of green apples and orange spiced tea coupled with a light s sweetness on the back. The nose has a complex wet grass/hay note going on with a bit of cobweb dustiness. Approaching nearly a decade of commercial releases now, this is an interesting little time capsule of a blend and a foreshadowing of things to come. In the end, these old bottles are going to be really fun to try a bit further down the road to see how they continue to evolve!
