Gran Torino (2008)
Directed by : Clint Eastwood
Screenplay by : Nick Schenk
Cinematography by : Tom Stern
Plot : Disgruntled Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a Hmong teenager who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession: a 1972 Gran Torino.
Why to watch : As Clint Eastwood reaches the end of his life, he presents us with yet another performance which is nothing short of legendary. Wishing to preserve the element of surprise, I will not reveal anything by trying to analyse this great work of art. I would say that both his directing and acting have reached a level of maturity comparable to that of an excellent wine. The story was compelling and, mixed with the drama was a refined touch of humour; the perfect combination for a pleasant evening.
Far from being about a car, 'Gran Torino' is another chapter in Clint Eastwood's ongoing quest to explore choices of dignity and disgrace, life and death.
There are very few who can grasp the human emotions with such intricacies and depth and Clint Eastwood is a master at that. The plot is finely crafted and just like the 1972 Gran Torino, the direction is sublime and overwhelming. One of the most subtle but finest of Eastwood's making. Clint Eastwood shows you why he still should be in FRONT of the camera and has a knack for storytelling.
Gran Torino simply made my day.
