#NormLiCsc Wanted to show an excerpt from BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW, directed by Panos Cosmatos. This was shot on 2-perf 35mm using a Panavision GII. Hallways lit by a series 6K spacelights gelled primary red and connected to a dimmer board. The triangle was uplit using a 2K on a dimmer. Depending on the scene, all static flares were done in camera and gelled a separate color to showcase the emotional state of the character or to evoke a feeling in the scene. Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) Director: Panos Cosmatos Starring: Michael Rogers, Eva Allan —————————————— Mandy was a top pick for me in 2018, so when I found out director Panos Cosmatos had another movie, I had to check it out. The two are very similar in style and it’s obvious Cosmatos created both. However Beyond the Black Rainbow is definitely the weirder of the two - so weird that I’d hesitate to recommend it to people because they’d probably think I’m a lunatic. From the very first scene I was convinced I was being brainwashed. This effect is created through trance-like, hypnotic editing - long, drawn out fading scenes paired with loud distorted sounds and fuzzy colors particularly red, blue, and white. This is the Cosmatos way and it’s visually haunting. But what this film lacks compared to Mandy is a concrete story to follow. It’s basically about a girl with some sort of telepathic powers being observed and tested in some sort of psychiatric institution and it’s pretty difficult to comprehend exactly what’s happening. But that’s the point as this is more of a sensory experience. I personally enjoyed the movie for the visual imagery but wouldn’t go so far as to call it great. Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) ... Paid for entirely with money from his dad's movie Tombstone, Panos Cosmatos delivered a righteous eerie trip with this gorgeous movie. With amazing visuals, a spectacular score from Sinoia Caves, and similar themes that pre-date Stranger Things, this one is really striking.
