Not all scientist wear lab coats! (Although I’ve been trying to convince my adviser that we should get lab coats anyways) In my area of research, our labs may not be what conventionally comes to mind when you think of a laboratory.

In my lab, we are interested in the human mind so we’re often trying to measure something we can’t see. We can’t use microscopes or other traditional sciencey machinery. Instead, we’ve had to develop new ways for us to have a glimpse into how the mind works. Most of the methods involve computers (okay likeeee all of them).

But Cognitive science has always been closely tied with computer science! Originally it was in part because people thought our brains worked like computers (they def don’t). But the development of technology has enabled us cognitive scientists to do SO much more.

Not only has the technology itself been crucial, but the development of the fields have helped. Things like artificial intelligence and machine learning are undoubtedly affecting cognitive science, as well as the other way around! Running computer models and simulations can often help develop theories on cognition while understanding cognition can also help move areas like AI forward. Additionally, the ability to automatise statistics (or even just not have to calculate things by hand) has allowed science to explore so many new avenues just by offering new ways to extract meaning out of data.
...
The interplay between the two fields just gets me all sorts of excited! I think there’s so much to learn from both sides and I hope that as we move forward, researchers in both areas don’t forget to look beyond their field.
