Photos from Harambee; a hostel on Holloway Rd, North London (1973-1976) . Harambee is Swahili for ‘pulling together’. British media at the time referred to it as ‘The Black House’ . The hostel was funded by the Islington Council and run by Herman Edwards (known as ‘Brother Herman’). At a time when the far right National Front movement was on the rise, Harambee provided a safer space for (mostly young) unemployed and disenfranchised black folks. Edwards also personally helped many residents access and navigate legal counsel, and at times gave them money from his own pocket. The hostel was defunded in the mid 70’s . The above images come from a series by white photographer Colin Jones. They were originally commissioned for a controversial Sunday Times piece called ‘On the Edge of the Ghetto’ (1973) . OZWALD BOATENG is to design his first ever womenswear collection. Boateng, who made history when he became the youngest black designer to open a shop on London’s famous Savile Row in 1995, will showcase the collection as a part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance, which occurred in the early part of the 20th century, is considered a golden age in African American arts and culture. It was sparked by the great migration of black people from the South. Boateng’s collection will be launched on May 5 at the Apollo theatre in Harlem, WWD reported. In a statement, the designer’s eponymous label said the show will celebrate culture, diversity, music, history and fashion.
