Sharky was fatally injured while performing an aerial trick at @seaworldorlando He died after colliding in mid-air with another dolphin. Four years later, at @seaworldtexas, two dolphins performing a jumping trick crashed, ejecting one from the tank onto the concrete walkway below. A baby beluga was found stranded alone in Alaska and rescued by NOAA The male calf was sent to Alaska SeaLife Center on September 30th for treatment, and was estimated to be only 2-4 weeks old. He comes from the endangered Cook Inlet beluga population that numbers around 300 individuals; his pod and mother nowhere to be seen at the time of rescue... "The calf appeared to have been stranded for several hours and was in a weakened condition; without evidence of major physical trauma." The little male has been successfully feeding from a tube, swimming on his own, and is being cared for 24/7. Staff from five of the six aquariums/parks in North America that hold belugas captive traveled to Alaska for assistance. Will this little calf be released someday? Highly unlikely, but unknown. NOAA almost always deems rescued cetacean babies unfit for release, but this is an unprecedented situation since the beluga's family is in danger of extinction and he is valuable in keeping genetic variation - Caption: @sevenseasoffreedom Video and info: Alaska SeaLife Center

The Southern Resident Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) are considered some of the most endangered animals in the world with only a population of about 74 individuals left! Over the last three decades, they have faced many trials from starvation, disease, and stillborn births. These genetically distinct #orca are considered a large extended family, comprised of three pods: J, K, and L pods. Within each pod, families form into sub-families which are centered around older females, usually grandmothers or great-grandmothers! This sub-species of orca are especially interesting because they feed almost exclusively on Chinook Salmon, which swim up and down the rivers in Puget Sound. It's estimated that this population of orca collectively consumes 190,000 to 260,000 adult Chinook salmon each year, but in some cases that's not enough for an animal that almost entirely depends on salmon for its food source. Thanks to all the amazing people who used their voice to bring these animal's story to the forefront, they may still have a future yet with the help of @noaaocean and @centerforwhaleresearch who are petitioning to have the dams opened to let more Salmon through, as well as evaluating environmental toxins!
