It was pretty cool to compare the ‘99 Salon with the ‘99 Delamotte “Collection” as I’ve heard the Delamotte outshines its more prestigious brethren. Well, after going back and forth between the two, I was incredibly impressed with the Delamotte but I couldn’t conclude it was better. Stylistically they were so similar that I wouldn’t have been able to tell them apart if I tasted them blind. Which I think is remarkable considering the Delamotte (disgorged in 2015) spent 5 years more on its lees. Both displayed a level of freshness, tension and precision that I wouldn’t have expected from such a ripe year. This is the best ‘99 Salon I’ve tasted. It’s worth noting that both bottles were purchased directly from the house which explains its impeccable condition. Wine gatherings with @wine_curator always involve crazy bottles, and that night didn’t disappoint. Champagnes were on top, with a fabulously fresh magnum of Comtes 1998, together with a pretty ripe and giving 164th edition from Krug, complemented with an abnormally evolved (but drinkable) bottle of Puligny-Montrachet “Les Combettes” 2008 from Etienne Sauzet. A Cava powerhouse’s Prosecco? This NV Freixenet Prosecco Extra Dry was a surprisingly decent example. A nose of yellow apples, fresh pears, and chamomile, with some confected cold fruit as well. High acid, off-dry (ca. 17 g/L RS), medium alcohol (11% abv), and a foamy quick mousse gave this wine a medium(-) body. The palate was much the same as the nose, but confected pear watered down predominated. This wine was decent, especially considering its price of about £6. There is little fruit concentration, but little of the sticky cloying mess that comes through in most Charmat’d Prosecco. This was a pleasant difference, so on a hot summer’s day I was not regretting it. My general rule of beer for bubbles under ca. £25 a bottle holds true, but this bubbler is widely available in the UK through supermarkets and I think it might show even better than Freixenet’s base level Cava.
