REFLECTION // We wish for things, envision goals and go for our dreams ☁️ But whilst we brew these visions into reality, our external world will continue to provide us with situations and circumstances that’ll force us to stretch, grow, learn, cry, wonder & be pushed to our limit. One of the best lessons I learn from a doctor at work was that if people aren’t willing to help themselves - you won’t be able to help them. I learnt it at quite a young age when I was trying to help my father overcome diabetes so that he wouldn’t have to lose his legs. The doctor sat me down in a gutter outside the hospital and warned me about taking on too much personally, that the process would make me unhealthy from a mental and physical health aspect. That doctor was having a cigarette at the same time #ironicmuch I learnt that I can only be of help if someone is willing to make the effort back. Whilst I can stand here with my arms wide open, I can only help if that person is willing to walk the steps forward to allow me to hug them. If you notice the same things/people/experiences showing up in your life, take a step back and reflect on it. Instead of saying, why me or why does this always happen to me. Try, what am I supposed to learn from this. What lessons can I take away from this experience. Notice how the shift in perception changes everything. You're switching from a victim mentality to an empowered mentality. Things aren't happening TO you, they're happening FOR you. Each lesson is an opportunity for growth and evolution. If you don't learn the first time (our first few times... trust me, it has taken me getting beaten over the head with lessons to learn... and I still fuck it up. I have always looked up to my dad. He is a much admired, hard working physician who went through med school while starting a family. He drew the blueprints for his dream house and built it in his “spare time.” He has raised five children, run marathons, travels to South America every year to take care of those in small villages who need medical care and always puts family first. He got me into fitness, encouraging me to run with him for fun. We ran our first 5k together when I was 11. We ran the same race exactly 30 years later. On Tuesday he had his second open heart surgery in 19 years, replacing one valve, repairing another, replacing 4” of his aorta with a stretchy fabric to remove a pseudo-aneurism and hopefully halting AFib through ablation. His recovery has amazed his doctors. Released from ICU one day later, he is back to his strong, funny self. I am so fortunate to have been by his side to see this amazing strong man face this incredibly serious and scary challenge and kick. its. a**. Such an experience filled with all the feels.
