Jeri Ward was only 30 years old when she had a life-altering clot-provoked stroke. She had a headache for five consecutive days with no relief. One evening, she was sitting on the couch with her husband, when she felt a loud pop and heard a fizzing sound in her head, similar to firecracker. It was followed by extreme dizziness and blurry vision. She was unable to move or speak for several seconds, and once she did, her words made on sense: Jeri was terrified. She got to the hospital ten minutes later and was diagnosed with blood clots in the frontal lobe of her brain. Doctors told her ten minutes longer may have been too late.

Why I’ve been absent from social media:
On Jan. 2, I was rushed to the emergency room. I had blood clots throughout my left leg: from my ankle up to my groin. The clots were traveling. Doctors looked at my chest. They found several pulmonary embolisms there. Action was immediately taken and thankfully, I’m recovering.
However, this post isn’t about my freak health scare. It’s about the people who dropped everything to be by my side.
To my best friends Carmen and Alicia, and boyfriend, Brian, who all took shifts at the hospital and made sure I was never alone. They brought me food. Made me laugh. Helped me to the bathroom. Held me when I cried, & even stayed the night because I was afraid to fall asleep.
To everyone who sent me flowers, food, stuffed animals, and balloons showing me how deeply you cared.
To my family who never stopped checking in and reminding me how much I am loved & needed.
To my mom, who flew up at a moments notice and was there when I opened my eyes after surgery. She provided me with the comfort only a mother can provide. She made me feel safe and pushed me to be strong through all of this.
Lastly, to Georgetown University Hospital who provided me with the best care possible and assured me that everything is going to be okay. -
I am so grateful to be alive.

#Bloodclots, #DVT, and #PE can sneak up on anyone — healthy or otherwise. If you think you have symptoms of either, seek medical help right away as they can be life-threatening.
When it came to my blood clots, I did not know I had survived, because I did not know how serious they were. When it came to my recovery from blood clots, I did not think I could survive, because it hurt too much. Everything in my life changed, and in many ways, I had to learn to live again. So often, people do not realize that blood clots can be devastating. In a matter of just two days, I went from running half marathons to using a walker and an oxygen tank 24/7. I did not think I would survive, and I certainly did not think things would ever go back to the way they once were (they haven't - but I know now that that is okay too). It took years to heal, and it took trusting in myself, my doctors, and the process. It took hope that there were better days ahead, and some days, hope was the only thing that kept me going. It took focus and determination. It also took release. I had to let go of how I thought it would be, in order to accept how it was. Recovery is why I am a survivor. I didn't give up, when that would have been the easier thing to do. .
