A week ago I was getting ready to race #boatrace2019 with 8 amazing guys. Since then a lot has been written regarding about whether I should have been allowed to race, why I raced, the impact on those around me. All of which I’ve no problem with, I haven’t spoke about anything publicly so wanted to put a few things straight especially as the brain injury is mentioned and it’s a community and injury that is misunderstood. Okay here we go. 1) I was just 1 of 8 people in that boat and was far from the first name on the sheet. 2) My motivation to come to Cambridge was and is the course that I’m doing which will (I believe) give me academic credibility to the work I do and want to do in the formation of public health policy. 3) Whilst studying at Cambridge I wanted to see if I could still cut it in a rowing boat, I miss the feeling of race day adrenaline and the relationships built in a team. 4) Bev and my marriage was not broken by coming to Cambridge we’ve fought hard for a number of years, we both want each other to be happy and create a loving, supportive albeit different environment for our children. 5) Studying here will enable me to change my career path and allow me to be there for the children even more than I have. 6) Finally, I wanted to show that as a society we are too quick to write people off after any setback. Time will tell if I’ve managed to do that. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2019/apr/14/james-cracknell-boat-race-milestone-not-sport-masochism-search-meaning
So monumental arse-wipes @smartwater_uk @cocacola_uk have been busy all morning shipping in pallets of single use bottles and setting up stalls ALONG THE THAMES. Their aim? To foist their plastic pollution into the hands of spectators. There are so many questions here including: - why in fuck’s name do #boatrace2019 spectators need hydration. They are not rowing. It’s a 20 minute race. This is not the london marathon (who btw are doing loads to combat plastic bottle pollution). -
how did the Boat Race sanction this sponsorship again? - good luck making eye contact with the 10,000s of UK citizens who have spent all weekend recovering fugitive plastic - mostly bottles @surfersagainstsewage #bigspringbeachclean for you to put them in again.
Btw @smartwater_uk your ‘100% recyclable’ claim is meaningless and you know it. Everything is technically recyclable. As you know we lack infrastructure for the volumes you produce. This is cynicism beyond belief and people are understandably losing their shit.
